Aces and River Cats Split Doubleheader

July 8, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release

RENO - The Reno Aces (@Aces) and Sacramento River Cats split a doubleheader Tuesday night at Aces Ballpark. Reno won game one, 2-1, and Sacramento took game two, 6-2.

Game one belonged to Aces starting pitcher, Caleb Clay (@CalebClay). The right-hander tossed five shutout innings and helped himself with an RBI single.

Clay's RBI single came in the second inning and gave Reno a 1-0 lead. In a scoreless game, Garrett Weber (@_weber5) doubled to lead off the inning and went to third on Blake Lalli's fly out to right-field. The lineup turned to Clay who grounded a base hit up the middle past a drawn in River Cats infield to score Weber.

A pair of singles brought in another run in the third. Danny Dorn started the frame with a base hit to left-field, but was wiped out on Todd Glaesmann's (@toddglaesmann22) fielder's choice. With Weber batting, Glaesmann stole second base, and scored moments later when Weber lined a base hit to right-center.

Clay kept it at 2-0, as did reliever J.C. Ramirez who delivered a zero in the top of the sixth. Sacramento managed a run in the seventh, but closer Addison Reed got former Ace Kevin Frandsen to ground out to end the game.

In game two, the River Cats held off a late rally by the Aces for a 6-2 win.

Sacramento took advantage of errors by Weber in the fourth and fifth innings. On ground balls that could have been 4-6-3 double plays, the throw to second base was wide of shortstop Brandon Drury allowing runners to be safe both times.

Pitcher Ty Blach hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth to score Carlos Triunfel and give the River Cats a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Aces starter Jhoulys Chacin (@Jhoulys45) issued a bases loaded walk to force in a run in the fifth, and reliever Evan Marshall (@emarsh31) hit Trevor Brown with the bases loaded to force in another run and give the River Cats a 3-0 lead.

The Aces came back with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and trailed 4-2 into the seventh inning. Weber drove in a run in the fifth with a double, and Jamie Romak knocked in Brandon Drury with a groundout in the sixth.

Sacramento picked up a pair of insurance runs in the seventh to put it out of reach. Blach got the win after he allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings, and Chacin was tagged with the loss.

The Aces open a five-game series with the Tacoma Rainiers Wednesday night at Aces Ballpark. Left-hander Justin Marks (5-6, 5.20) starts for the Aces against right-hander Jordan Pries (3-2, 5.65) for the Rainiers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
