Tacoma Rainiers News Release
FRESNO, Calif. -- Jesus Montero collected three hits, including a pair of triples, as the Tacoma Rainiers held on for an 8-7 win over the Fresno Grizzlies at Chukchansi Park on Tuesday night.
Montero ended the night 3-for-4 with four RBI, beginning with a run-scoring single in the top of the first that helped the Rainiers pull ahead 1-0. The first baseman capped off a four-run frame in the fourth when he plated James Jones with his first triple of the evening. He hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and then drove in a final run with another triple that scored Jones in the eighth.
Montero leads the league with 110 hits and is batting .328 through his first 83 games played this season. The 2015 Pacific Coast League All-Star has now tallied a career-best five triples this season, which places him in a three-way tie for the team lead. Prior to this season, Montero had recorded just 10 triples in his first 801 professional games.
Stefen Romero and Steve Baron turned in the team's only other extra-base hits after each collected a pair of hits. Romero tripled in the first inning and then hit an RBI single in the fourth. Baron turned in a pair of singles and is now batting .365 through his first 18 games played this season.
Logan Kensing (1-0) collected the win after holding the Grizzlies to two unearned run over 2.0 innings of relief work that began with one out in the fifth. Tom Wilhelmsen picked up his first save with the Rainiers this season following a scoreless effort in the ninth. Starter Roenis Elias allowed four runs on five hits, walked two, and struck out five.
The Rainiers (43-43) hit the road and head to Reno for a four-game series with the Aces that begins tomorrow, July 8. Right-hander Jordan Pries (3-2, 5.65) is slated to start for Tacoma. Left-hander Justin Marks (5-6, 5.20) is expected to start for the Aces. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
