Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Catcher Damaso Espino hit a game-winning two-run double in his first game with Albuquerque this season as the Isotopes (44-36) rallied down two in the ninth for a 6-5 win over Round Rock (45-35). The Isotopes split the series and picked up a game on the Express for the second straight night and now trail them by one game in the American Southern Division.
After Round Rock put up two in the ninth, the Isotopes responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to complete the comeback. Matt Angle brought the Topes within one on an RBI single and Espino finished the walk-off with his third double of the day to bring home Angle and Chili Buss. The game-winning hit tied the Isotopes team record for two baggers in a game this season.
The Isotopes were held scoreless through six until Brian Barden broke through against Express starter Ryan Feierabend in the seventh inning. The third baseman cracked his third home run of the season pulling Albuquerque to within two runs of Round Rock. Barden accounted for the first three Albuquerque runs doubling home two more in the eighth to tie the game at three.
Starting pitcher Aaron Laffey allowed a single tally in each the third, fourth and sixth innings as the Isotopes fell behind 3-0. The southpaw went 5.2 innings allowing three runs on ten hits. He also walked two and struck out two.
Josh Wall entered the sixth with two runners on and two outs. He walked the first batter he faced to load the bases but closed the door on Round Rock punching out Jared Hoying. He tossed 1.1 scoreless frames. Righty Steve Ames allowed two runs on four hits over 1.2 innings. Southpaw Kelvin De La Cruz (1-1, 3.60) recorded an out in the ninth on a strikeout earning the win. He also walked a batter.
Buss went 2-for-4 in the contest with a run. He hit .470 (8-for-17) in the series with three triples and a home run. Joseph Ortiz (1-1, 5.59) suffered the loss for Round Rock. He tossed two-thirds of an inning and walked one.
The Isotopes hit the road for four games against the Memphis Redbirds before taking on the Oklahoma City RedHawks in a three-game set. They open the road trip Thursday, June 27 at 6:05 PM MDT following an off day tomorrow. Memphis will send righty Boone Whiting (4-3, 3.75) to the hill to open the series. Albuquerque has yet to announce a starter. The club returns to Albuquerque for a seven-game homestand with Iowa and Nashville beginning Thursday, July 4.
