Lyons Limits Cubs to One Hit in 7-0 Memphis Win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Tyler Lyons, Mitchell Boggs, and Deryk Hooker combined to allow one hit over nine shutout innings as the Memphis Redbirds dominated the division-rival Iowa Cubs in a 7-0 rout on Tuesday night at AutoZone Park.

It was the Redbirds' fifth one-hit shutout in franchise history and first since Chris Narveson, Matt Ginter, and Troy Cate combined to limit Sacramento to one hit in a 1-0 victory over Sacramento on July 26, 2007 at AutoZone Park.

Memphis (39-41) took three of four from Iowa in the series to move back into a tie for first place in the PCL American Northern Division. Memphis pitching shut out Iowa in 33 of the 36 innings over the four games.

The Redbirds lead the PCL with 11 shutout victories. The 2000 Memphis squad pitched a record-setting 12 shutouts.

In his first start with the Redbirds since being optioned by St. Louis, Lyons (3-1) allowed one hit and faced the minimum in seven innings for the win. He walked none and struck out four.

After allowing only the one-out single to Jae-Hoon Ha in the top of the first inning, Lyons quickly picked off his only baserunner during an attempt to steal second base on the next play. The southpaw retired the final 18 consecutive batters before departing after 71 pitches (48 for strikes).

Boggs and Hooker each struck out one over a pair of perfect innings to gift-wrap the one-hit shutout. The outing was Hooker's Triple-A debut.

The Redbirds batted around to score six runs during a 35-minute bottom of the first inning as Cubs starter Yoanner Negrin (2-3) allowed the first seven Redbirds to reach via hit, walk, or error.

Leadoff man Adron Chambers - who became the second Redbird to record two hits in an inning this season - tripled down the right field line and scored as Kolten Wong ripped an RBI single up the middle.

Two batters later, Chad Huffman drove a ground-rule double over the right field wall for the next two runs, followed by Brock Peterson scoring on a fielding error.

Chambers' second hit of the inning was a two-run single and concluded Memphis' scoring in the frame. Vance Albitz was the last Redbird to record two hits in an inning, doubling twice in the eighth on April 8, 2013 versus New Orleans.

With nearly a half-dozen Canadian-flag waving fans in the stands, Romak went yard over the left field wall in the fifth. The home run was his 16th of the season and moved him into a tie for second place in the PCL behind teammate Brock Peterson (18).

After a league-wide off day tomorrow, the Redbirds wrap up their homestand with a four-game series with the Albuquerque Isotopes (Triple-A Dodgers) beginning Thursday, their final meeting of the 2013 season.

Memphis will send right-hander Boone Whiting (4-3, 4.75) to the mound in the opener to face Albuquerque left-hander Rob Rasmussen (0-1, 9.42).
