Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Today's Game: The RedHawks and Storm Chasers close out their series of six games in four days with a doubleheader starting at 4:30 p.m. After the RedHawks won the first two games of the series, the Storm Chasers have taken the last two.
Last Game: Omaha scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead and held on for a 3-2 win against the RedHawks Monday night. Irving Falu led off the game with a triple, and Christian Colon hit an RBI single on the very next pitch to make it 1-0. A two-run homer from Jimmy Paredes in the third put the RedHawks in front, 2-1. It stayed that way until the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out, Chase Lambin sent a ground ball to first. Jon Singleton threw over to second to get the force out, but Jonathan Villar's return throw to first was wide, and a pair of runs scored. RedHawks starting pitcher Philip Humber (0-3) took the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits in a season-high seven innings pitched.
Today's Probable Pitchers: Jarred Cosart will start game one...He threw six scoreless innings and earned his team-leading seventh win Thursday in New Orleans. Cosart scattered four hits, struck out eight batters and did not issue a walk as the RedHawks won, 4-1. It was the first time since April 20 Cosart did not walk a single hitter, and he had walked 20 batters over his previous four starts (20.1 IP)...Cosart's .197 opponent average leads the PCL, and his 3.09 ERA ranks fifth. His strikeouts per nine innings (9.4) ranks fifth, but he also sits third in walks (42)...He leads the RedHawks with seven wins, 75.2 innings and 79 strikeouts...For this first time in 19 starts at the Triple-A level, Cosart has pitched at least six innings in consecutive games. Over those two games he's notched a pair of wins and allowed two runs and eight hits with 11 strikeouts over 12 innings...He is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in two starts against Omaha this season. Although the Storm Chasers are only hitting .143 against him, Cosart has walked 11 over 10-plus innings.
Bobby Doran is slated to start the second game and make his Triple-A debut...Doran has spent this season with Double-A Corpus Christi, pitching in 19 games with nine starts as part of the Hooks tandem rotation. He is 6-1 with two saves and a 3.42 ERA...Doran is among the Texas League leaders in several categories, ranking eighth in ERA, fifth in WHIP (1.08), and fifth in opponent average (.226)...He's allowed more than three runs in just two appearances this season and only once in nine starts...His last outing was Friday in Frisco, where he pitched three scoreless and hitless innings of relief following tandem mate Nick Tropeano...Doran was selected by Houston in the fourth round of the 2010 draft from Texas Tech University.
Against the Storm Chasers: 2013: 5-4 2012: 6-10 All-time: 115-102 In OKC: 59-51
Oklahoma City is 4-2 against Omaha in Bricktown this season, winning the first four meetings before suffering losses in the last two games...In their most recent series, Omaha took two of three games at Werner Park earlier this month. The third meeting of the four-game series was suspended due to rain in the bottom of the first inning and will be resumed July 23...The RedHawks won both games of a weather-shortened two-game series in Oklahoma City in May by a combined score of 13-3 and clinched a winning home series against Omaha for the first time since June 26-29, 2010...During the 2012 season series, Omaha averaged 6.9 runs per game, but so far in 2013 they have scored a total of 28 runs (3.1 RPG) and are batting .214...The RedHawks lead the all-time series, 115-102, but Omaha entered 2013 having won four of the last five season series against Oklahoma City.
Significant Subtractions: RedHawks infielders Jake Elmore and Brett Wallace were both recalled to Houston today. They were the two hottest hitters in the lineup: Elmore was batting .400 over his last 13 games and Wallace had hit safely in 14 of his last 15 games, batting .393 during that stretch. Wallace leads the Redhawks with a .326 average, 11 home runs, and 37 RBIs. Elmore is tops on the squad with 80 hits and 42 runs and is second with 16 stolen bases.
In a corresponding move, infielder Ruben Sosa will join the RedHawks. During a brief stint with OKC in early April, Sosa went 2-for-5 over two games. He had been playing with Low-A Quad Cities, hitting .300 over 16 games with 10 stolen bases. Sosa played collegiately at both Western Oklahoma State College and Oklahoma City University.
Six Pack: This is the first six-game series the RedHawks have played in since Aug. 22-26, 2007 in Nashville. The RedHawks and Sounds split the set. However, that series was played over five days.
Close Calls: For the second time this season, the RedHawks have played three consecutive one-run games. The other instance was May 26-27 in Iowa (May 26 was a doubleheader), and in both cases, the RedHawks went 1-2. They are now 9-12 overall in one-run games and their .429 winning percentage ranks 13th in the PCL. Last season they had they league's best winning percentage in one-run games (.609, 28-18).
Double Dipping: Today is the team's sixth doubleheader of the season, second-most in the PCL only behind Omaha, who will play in their seventh twinbill. The RedHawks are 4-6 in doubleheader games, including 2-2 at home. They have not swept a doubleheader in their last six tries going back to last season. Each of their last five games in doubleheaders has been decided by one run.
Starting Line: Over the last eight games, the RedHawks starting rotation has posted a 1.41 ERA (8 ER/51.0 IP). In the last 13 games, OKC starting pitchers have allowed one or no earned runs eight times, with nine quality starts.
Home-Less: Today's games are the final two home games in June. The RedHawks are currently 5-7 and, at best, can finish this month with a .500 record at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. They have not had a losing month in OKC since June, 2011 (5-11).
