Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Michael Choice and Grant Green each went 3-for-5, but the River Cats fell to the visiting Colorado Springs Sky Sox by a score of 5-3 on Monday evening at Raley Field.
Colorado Springs struck early, plating four runs in the second inning off of Sacramento starter Justin Thomas. Sacramento-native Tim Wheeler continued his strong series at the plate for the Sky Sox, driving in two runs with a double to center to lead the scoring.
The Cats responded in the bottom half of the inning to get back one run, scoring on a RBI-single from Andy Parrino. A solo blast to left field by Greg Golson-his fifth of the season-in the fourth inning pushed the Colorado Springs lead back to four. The Cats responded again in the bottom half of the inning to get to within three-with Parrino knocking in his second run of the night to score Michael Taylor.
Both teams were held scoreless until the eighth inning, when Stephen Vogt drove in the Cats' third run of the evening with a line drive to center that brought home Green. That would be all the Cats could muster though, as the Sky Sox staff rebounded from giving up 59 runs in their last five outings to hold the Cats to just three runs.
Offensively, Parrino powered the Cats, as he continued to heat up with a 2-for-4, two-RBI performance at the plate. Coming into the game, the infielder was 6-for-16 in his five previous contests with four RBIs.
Thomas was stuck with the loss for the Cats, suffering his sixth defeat of the season. Through 5.2 innings the right-hander surrendered five runs while recording a season-high eight strikeouts to three walks.
The River Cats wrap up their four-game set with the Sky Sox on Toyota Family Value Tuesday at 12:05 p.m. at Raley Field. That night will also be Olympic Day as right-hander Travis Banwart (4-3, 4.50 ERA) is set to take the hill for the Cats. Drew Carpenter (1-3, 6.91 ERA) is set to oppose him for the Sky Sox.
