Isotopes fall in 11 at Oklahoma, 3-2
May 31, 2006 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Scott Seabol homered for the third-straight game and the âTopes took a lead into the seventh inning, but a walk-off single by Nick Trzesniak pushed the Oklahoma RedHawks (23-30) to a 3-2 victory over Albuquerque (33-21) Wednesday night at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.
Seabol put the âTopes on top with a two-run homer in the sixth. An Oklahoma tally in the seventh tied the score, and a Jace Brewer triple followed by a Trzesniak chopper over the out-stretched glove of âTopes third baseman Mike Kinkade and into left field chased home the game-winner for the RedHawks in the 11th.
The âTopes have been dealt back-to-back one-run defeats to Oklahoma, but remain 2.5 games ahead in the division coupled with a Round Rock defeat to Memphis.
âTopes starter Jeff Fulchino was very effective, leaving the game after six innings with his team on top by a run. The big right-hander allowed just an unearned run on two hits through six innings. He walked two and fanned four. Brad Clontz (4-1) was the fourth Isotopes reliever to enter the game. Clontz retired the side in the 10th, but allowed the game winner in the 11th and was pinned with the loss.
Oklahoma starter Edinson Volquez allowed two runs on four hits in seven innings, striking out eight. The third RedHawk reliever, Wes Littleton (2-0), tossed 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit and no runs to earn the victory.
The RedHawks lit up the scoreboard in the first, taking advantage of a âTopes miscue to go ahead. After Joaquin Arias induced a two-out walk, he'd come around to score one batter later when âTopes centerfielder Eric Reed dropped a fly ball and was charged with a fielding error on a ball hit by Adam Hyzdu. Fulchino went on to retire the next hitter, and as it would turn out, the RedHawks wouldn't be able to push anything more across against Fulchino.
Mired in an old fashioned pitcher's duel, both teams went quiet through the fifth inning and the home team maintained its 1-0 advantage. In the sixth, though, the Isotopes finally broke through and it was a familiar culprit who provided the damage. Kinkade led off the sixth with a double to left field, putting the wheels in motion for Albuquerque. Two batters later, Seabol punished an 0-2 offering from Volquez and sent it deep to left for his league-leading 16th home run of the season. The two-run blast was enough to put the âTopes on top for the first time, 2-1.
Fulchino kept Oklahoma quiet in the bottom half of the frame, marking the end of his evening. The RedHawks would quickly capitalize on the pitching change. In the bottom of the seventh, back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt off Fulchino's successor Chris Resop put two runners in scoring position with one away. Joe Horgan came on in relief and retired the first batter he faced. But, back-to-back walks forced home the tying run, pushing the score to 2-2. The game stood that way through10 ½ until Trzesniak ended it with one out in the final frame.
Seabol finished 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Kinkade recorded a three-hit night with a run scored.
The âTopes continue their road trip on Thursday with a 6:05 p.m. MT first pitch at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. Albuquerque will send left-hander Matt Blank (0-0, 2.25) to the hill, and the RedHawks will counter with Nick Masset (0-2, 21.00). The âTopes return home on June 8. Tickets are available at the Isotopes Park Box Office, Ticketmaster outlets and on-line at www.albuquerquebaseball.com. For more information, please call (505) 924-2255.
