Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
MAY 31, 2006, 7:05 p.m. : OMAHA ROYALS (21-31) vs. New Orleans Zephyrs (27-25)
HOME: 14-14 (35-37 in '05) AWAY: 7-17 (37-35 in '05) vs. New Orleans: 1-0 (11-5 in '05)
TONIGHT: The Royals host the New Orleans Zephyrs in a 7:05 p.m. game at Rosenblatt Stadium. Omaha leads the series 1-0 and is 3-3 on the homestand. It's Coors Restaurant Night, with drawings all night for free gift certificates to area restaurants. Plus, it's Women's Wednesday: all women get $2 off the price of a ticket and one will win a $250 shopping spree to Borsheim's. Air-time is 6:45 p.m. on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.
LAST NIGHT: A wild finish capped the Royals 4-3 win in the series opener. The Z's had already scored 1 run in the 9th and had runners at 1st and 3rd with 1 out. Tyrell Godwin belted a towering fly ball to deep left-center field and Kerry Robinson made a terrific running catch. Robinson's throw to shortstop Mike Aviles was relayed to Ricky Bell for an apparent double play at 1st base, with the tying run scoring on a tag up from 3rd. However, Bell went across the diamond and stepped on 3rd base to appeal that pinch-runner Kenny Kelly left early. The appeal was upheld and the game was over. Adam Bernero (2-2) got the win, allowing just 2 runs in 8.0 solid innings. Leo Nunez, despite yielding an RBI single and Godwin's long fly ball, picked up his 1st save.
ROYALS REPORT: Bernero's outing last night marked his 5th consecutive quality start. However, it was his 1st win against 2 losses in that stretch. Over that span, he owns a 2.97 ERA and has walked only 4 batters while fanning 23 in 33.1 innings. *** After not hitting a home run in his 1st 19 games with Omaha, Mark Teahen has gone deep in back-to-back contests. Teahen, who had a team-high 11-game hitting streak halted on Sunday, has now hit in 13 of the past 14 tilts. He's hitting a sizzling .521 (25-48) with 13 RBI in that stretch. *** Ruben Gotay's RBI single in the 7th inning last night gave the Royals a much-needed insurance run and extended his hitting streak to 9 games. He's hitting .471 (16-34) during his season-best string, with 2 homers and 6 RBI. *** After going 0-for-17 in his 1st 4 games back from KC, Justin Huber has hit in 7 of the past games, going 10-for-27 (.370) with 5 extra-base hits and 3 RBI. *** Aviles knocked in a 1st inning run last night with his 10th double of the season. He's 2-for-8 in the last 2 home games, but is hitting .190 at Rosenblatt compared to .293 on the road. *** Bell's 4th inning single snapped an 0-for-16 slide at the plate. He's hitting .156 (15-96) in May. *** Dee Brown ended an 0-for-13 steak at the plate with a leadoff single in the 7th inning last night. *** Chad Allen missed his 7th straight game last night with a tight hamstring, but is expected back in the Royals lineup soon. Allen owns a 10-game hitting streak (.463, 19-41). *** Nunez, who was charged with a blown save in game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader vs. Memphis, recorded the Omaha bullpen's 9th save last night in 17 opportunities.
STARTERS: RH Pedro Astacio (0-0, 0.00) vs. RH David Elder (0-0, 3.91)
Elder makes his 2nd spot start for Eddie Yarnall, who has been placed on the D.L (stiff back). It's the 30-year old right-hander's 15th appearance of the season. In his 1st start last Friday vs. Memphis, Elder and Luke Hudson combined on a 4-hitter in a 7-0 win, in a game that was delayed almost 2 hours at the start due to the Royals travel problems. It was a no-decision for Elder, as he was 1 out shy of qualifying for the "W" (4.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K). Elder began the 2005 season with Somerset of the independent Atlantic League. He was 4-1 with a 1.47 ERA and 6 saves in 32 games. His contract was purchased by KC on August 8 and he was assigned to Omaha. In 11 relief appearances with the Royals, he went 2-0 and did not allow an earned run over 16.0 innings. He gave up just 8 hits, walking 7 batters and striking out 16. Elder pitched in parts of the 2002 and 2003 season with the Cleveland Indians. He had an impressive 1st season in the big leagues in 2002, posting a 3.13 ERA in 15 relief appearances while going 0-2; he notched 23 strikeouts in 23.0 innings. Elder was originally selected by the Rangers in the 4th round of the 1997 draft out of Georgia Tech, where he was a teammate of Nomar Garciaparra.
PROBABLES FOR REMAINDER OF SERIES:
Thur., 12:05: RH Anastacio Martinez (1-2, 5.23) vs. RH Kyle Snyder (0-3, 3.81)
Fri., 7:05: RH Nelson Figueroa (2-0, 5.73) vs. RH Brian Boehringer (0-0, 1.35)
