Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Fresno - Jed Hansen hit his fourth home run of the season leading off in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Fresno Grizzlies a 3-2 win over the Sidewinders on Tuesday night at Grizzlies Stadium. Hansen's blast cleared the 385'sign in left center and dealt the Sidewinders their ninth loss in 13 games this season against the Grizzlies.
Tony Pena surrendered the homer and fell to 0-1 on the season. Jack Taschner, who struck out the side in the top of the ninth, earned the win to improve his record to 3-2.
Tucson trailed 1-0 going to the seventh but scored a run to tie the game. Matt Erickson singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by Fresno pitcher Jeff Miller. After Wilkin Castillo's ground ball to short advanced Erickson to third, Kenny Perez beat out an infield base hit to score Erickson.
The Sidewinders took a brief 2-1 advantage in the top of the eighth on Chris Young's sixth home run of the season. Young's leadoff blast put the Sidewinders in front but Tucson left two runners on base.
Fresno tied the game in the bottom of the eighth. After pinch hitter Todd Linden singled to left with one out, Frederick Lewis lined a single to left that Erickson overran advancing Linden to third and Lewis to second. Tim Hutting's ground ball to short scored Linden and tied the game at two.
The error was Erickson's first of the year.
Neither starting pitcher received a decision but both pitched well. Matt Kinney tossed six shutout innings for Fresno and stranded five Sidewinders base runners, including leaving the bases loaded in the sixth. Edgar Gonzalez allowed a first inning run but nothing more for Tucson. He finished with three hits, three walks and two strikeouts in his six innings of work.
Fresno jumped on top with a run in the first inning without the benefit of a hit. Lewis led off with a walk and went all the way to third when he took off for second on a 3-1 pitch to Hutting. Wilkin Castillo's throw went into center field advancing Lewis. Dan Ortmeier then had a sacrifice fly to put Fresno in front 1-0.
The Sidewinders and Grizzlies play game two of their four game series on Wednesday night at Grizzlies Stadium. Right-hander Russ Ortiz (0-0 3.21) makes his fourth rehab appearance for the Sidewinders against right-hander James Garcia (4-1 6.27) for the Grizzlies. Terry Mulholland is scheduled to make his third rehab appearance for Tucson in relief of Ortiz. First pitch is at 7:05. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:50.
