Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

FRESNO -- Albuquerque (63-52) fell prey to another early deficit which proved too much for their two-run ninth-inning rally falling to Fresno (54-60) 4-2 in the series opener.

The Isotopes entered the ninth frame trailing 4-0. With Angle on first, newcomer Drew Butera recorded his first hit as an Isotope with two outs putting runners on the corners. Rusty Ryal walked loading the Bases for Dee Gordon. The shortstop picked up his first hit of the night scoring Angle and Butera cutting the Fresno advantage in half. Heath Hembree then came on and fanned Elian Herrera to end the game for his 25 save.

Gordon's ninth-inning base knock extended his hitting streak to 17 games, surpassing Brian Barden for the longest Isotopes hit streak of 2013.

Two first-innings runs by the Grizzlies and another in the third had the Isotopes on their heels from the beginning. They would tally one more in the sixth off of reliever Luis Vasquez to put the finishing touches on their victory.

Jonathan Sanchez (4-2, 5.09) suffered the loss allowing three runs on four hits through five innings of work. A double in the first by Francisco Peguero and another in the third Johnny Monell accounted for two of the three runs against the lefty.

Vasquez entered in the sixth and went a season-high three innings surrendering one run on four hits. It was only the second run he has given up in seven games (10.2 IP) since joining the Isotopes. The righty carries a 1.69 ERA. He also walked one and struck out three.

The Isotopes continue their four-game series with Fresno with game two tomorrow, August 4 at 7:05 PM MDT. Matt Magill (4-0, 2.44) will look to stay unbeaten and end the Topes four-game skid against the Grizzlies southpaw Eric Surkamp (3-0, 3.90).
