Iowa Cubs News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers (61-54) snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 5-0 victory over the Iowa Cubs (51-64) at Cheney Stadium tonight. The Cubs have now lost nine straight games overall and 12 in a row on the road. This ties the Iowa franchise record for most consecutive road losses, set in 1975.
Rainiers' starter Hector Noesi (3-1) allowed five hits, walked two, and struck out five in six innings for the win. Darnell McDonald doubled in the fifth inning for the Cubs' only extra-base hit. Chance Ruffin pitched the seventh inning and Carter Capps finished the final two innings to complete the Rainiers' ninth shutout of the season. The Cubs have been blanked a league-high 13 times this year, including 11 on the road.
The Rainiers got on the board early with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning against Cubs' starter Brooks Raley. Ty Kelly reached on an error by Mike Olt at third base and scored from first when Franklin Gutierrez singled and Dave Sappelt mishandled the ball in left for the second error of the inning. Gutierrez later scored on a two-out single by Jesus Montero.
Raley (6-8) allowed two more runs while working through five innings. Stefen Romero led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Montero. Abraham Almonte tripled in the fifth and scored on a base hit by Kelly. Yoanner Negrin and Marcus Hatley each pitched a scoreless inning before the Rainiers scored their final run against Marcos Mateo in the eighth.
The Cubs and Rainiers continue this series tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Central time. RH Jake Arrieta (1-2, 4.03) will start for the Cubs against RH Taijuan Walker (2-1, 3.09) for the Rainiers. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed live at iowacubs.com, with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 3:10.
