Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A 7.2, 111-pitch effort by Sacramento starter Bruce Billings in which the right-hander held the Round Rock Express to one run on four hits was good enough to propel the River Cats to a 3-1 win on Sunday night at Raley Field.
Shane Peterson got the Cats on the board early, delivering home Jemile Weeks with an RBI single. The knock gave the outfielder his fifth RBI in the Cats' last six games. Both pitchers would hold serve until the sixth inning, when a two-spot from Sacramento triple their advantage. After two walks and a double loaded the bases on Express starter Scott Richmond, Ryan Ortiz delivered the initial blow with a sacrifice fly to bring Michael Taylor in from third. Andy Parrino finished off the scoring for the Cats with an RBI single to score Barton.
Round Rock was able to get one across in the eighth inning, scoring their only run of the game off of Billings with a line drive RBI single to right field via Leury Garcia. Right-hander Brian Gordon finished off the game for the Cats in the ninth inning, retiring the Express in order for his 12th save of the season.
For Billings it was his third straight start in which he pitched into the eighth inning. Over his last three starts he has given up five runs over the course of 23.0 innings of work, good for a 1.96 ERA. Gordon's save was the reliever's third in the last four games. Overall the Cats have recorded saves in their last four games. Sacramento is now 4-0 in the month of August, their best start to a month this season.
A 4-2 win by the Las Vegas 51s over the Memphis Redbirds prior to Sacramento's win ensured the Cats would remain in a virtual tie for first place in the Pacific South division with a win.
The River Cats will play the third edition of their four-game set with the Express on Throwback Monday presented by Cache Creek. Right-hander Travis Banwart (7-5, 4.75 ERA) will head to the hill with a 3.55 ERA over his last three starts for the Cats, with Jake Brigham (4-3, 4.07 ERA) set to oppose him for Round Rock.
