MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A dominating pitching performance from Rafael Montero led the Las Vegas 51s to a 4-1 win over the Memphis Redbirds on Sunday night at AutoZone Park, snapping a three-game winning streak.
Montero (3-3) hurled a season-high eight innings, yielding four hits for one run while striking out four. Rob Carson recorded the final out of the game to convert his eighth save.
Second baseman Kolten Wong (2-for-4) and third baseman Greg Garcia (2-for-4) each doubled and accounted for four of Memphis' six hits. Outfielder Mike O'Neill went hitless for the first time in five games for the Redbirds.
Michael Wacha retired nine of his first 10 batters in the game before Las Vegas dropped a three-spot in the fourth inning. Wilmer Flores began the rally with his team-leading 15th home run, a solo shot over the left field wall. Wacha then surrendered a double sandwiched between two singles to account for the next two runs.
Montero allowed one hit through the first six innings before Wong laced a one-out double in the seventh. He moved to third on a Jamie Romak groundout and scored as Garcia reached on an infield RBI single.
Las Vegas tacked on an insurance run in ninth for a 4-1 lead as Victor Marte plunked Eric Campbell with the bases loaded.
Wacha (5-3) finished with three earned runs on six hits in five innings of work for the loss. He struck out six and walked one with 83 pitches, 57 for strikes. Nick Greenwood struck out two over two scoreless frames in relief.
The two teams continue their series at 7:05 pm CT on Monday night at AutoZone Park. Left-hander Tyler Lyons (6-1, 3.00) will start for Memphis against Las Vegas righty Chris Schwinden (4-9, 5.94).
