Isotopes Down Royals in 5-2 Decision
May 27, 2005 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Josh Willingham homered in his fourth consecutive game and Jeff Fulchino allowed just two runs in his longest outing of the season to lead the Albuquerque Isotopes (27-22) to a 5-2 win over the visiting Omaha Royals (22-27) Friday night at Isotopes Park. Willingham leads the Pacific Coast League with 15 home runs on the year.
With Friday night's win and Memphis' 5-4 victory over Oklahoma, the Isotopes took sole possession of first place in the Southern Division. The âTopes improved to 4-1 against Omaha this season and have won 12 of their last 16 games, overall.
Fulchino (4-3) held the Royals to six hits in 7.1 innings and fanned a pair to earn his third win in his last four outings. J.B. Miadich worked the final 1.1 innings to earn his seven save of the year and his second in as many games. Danny Tamayo (3-3) was charged with the loss for Omaha after being tagged for four runs on 10 hits in five innings. Drew Niles also had a big day at the plate for Albuquerque with three hits, including his first home run of the year, and three RBI's.
Omaha jumped on top first with an RBI-single by Chris Truby in the first inning and made it 2-0 in the third when Adrian Brown homered to left field. But the Isotopes came back with three runs in the home half to take the lead. Chris Ashby got the âTopes' rally going with a lead-off single to left field and moved to second base on a walk by Josh Wilson.
Mark Little got Albuquerque on the board with an RBI-single to center field and Niles followed with his first of two big hits on the night â a two-run single to right field that gave the Isotopes their first lead of the game. Willingham and Niles each hit solo home runs in the fourth and seventh innings, respectively, to provide the âTopes some breathing room.
Albuquerque will continue its eight-game homestand with the second game of a four-game series against the Omaha Royals Saturday night at 7:05. Right-handed pitcher Travis Smith (2-1, 6.75) is slated to start for Albuquerque against Omaha righty Ryan Baerlocher (0-0, 2.70). Come early to receive one of 5,000 patriotic notebooks that will be handed out prior to the game and stay late for the post-game fireworks extravaganza. Tickets are available at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at local Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com, and Ticketmaster by phone at 883-7800.
