Nashville Sounds News Release

NASHVILLE — The Nashville Sounds showed no signs of weariness following a long travel day that began in the wee hours in Portland, Oregon, and ended with a 13-3 shellacking of the New Orleans Zephyrs on Friday evening at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series.

Nashville (24-25) hammered a season-high four home runs and ripped 10 of their 13 hits for extra bases in the club's largest win of the year. Every Sounds starter scored a run and recorded a hit with the exception of Trent Durrington (0-for-3).

Left fielder Brad Nelson put Nashville up 3-0 with a three-run home run to center off Zephyrs starter Mark DiFelice in the bottom of the first inning. It was the outfielder's fifth longball of the season and second in his last three games.

The Sounds doubled their advantage to 6-0 with three two-out runs in the third. Dave Krynzel ripped his team-leading 14th double to plate Julio Mosquera before scoring on Weeks' team-leading ninth home run. The blast, the second baseman's second in his last two games, established a new career high, eclipsing the eight he hit in 133 games for Double-A Huntsville last summer.

New Orleans jumped on the board in the top of the third when catcher John Wilson led off with a single and came around to score on a one-out RBI double by Brandon Watson.

Kevin Orie extended the Sounds' lead to 7-1 in the top of the fourth with a leadoff solo homer off DiFelice, the infielder's seventh roundtripper of the year.

Nashville continued to pour it on in the fourth, adding two runs to move the lead to 9-1. Starting pitcher Rick Helling led off with a double and scored when Krynzel ripped his second triple of the season into the right field corner. One out later, Prince Fielder brought him in with a sac fly.

The Sounds scored in their fifth straight frame when they took a 10-1 advantage in the fifth when Corey Hart, who had doubled, scored on a wild pitch by Zephyrs reliever Dan Smith.

Prince Fielder continued the offensive barrage when he lambasted a two-run home run onto Chestnut Street on the fly well beyond the right field wall at Greer Stadium. The blast was his seventh of the year and fourth in his last five contests.

Helling (3-2) logged his fourth consecutive quality start for the Sounds and picked up his third win. However, he left the contest early when his left arm was impaled by a portion of Craig Kuzmic's broken bat in the top of the seventh inning; Helling, who allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for further treatment.

Former Sound J.J. Davis gave fans a glimpse of the past two years when he belted a mammoth solo homer to left off Clint Weibl in the top of the eighth, his second homer of the season.

Hart (3-for-5) completed his solid night by driving in the Sounds' final run with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, upping Nashville's lead to 13-2.

New Orleans tacked on the night's final tally on a fielding error by Durrington at shortstop.

DiFelice (1-2) took the loss in his spot start after allowing 10 runs in just 4 1/3 innings.

The teams continue the series with a 6 p.m. meeting on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Justin Lehr (4-4, 6.35) makes his second start of the year for Nashville. He'll face New Orleans southpaw Ed Yarnall (3-2, 5.03).
