Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Ben Johnson was 3-for-4 with two home runs and a double, and the Portland Beavers matched a season high with 15 hits in an 8-4 victory over the Nashville Sounds before 8,136 at PGE Park Thursday night.
Mike Bumstead picked up his first win for Portland this season and added a clutch two-run double with the bases loaded in the third. Adam Hyzdu was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a pair of RBIs, while J.J. Furmaniak stroked his fifth home run of the season.
Jeff Housman took the loss, allowing seven early runs as the Beavers (22-23) moved out to a 7-2 lead after three innings.
The Beavers, who have won five of their last six games after taking three of four from Nashville, open up a five-game series at Colorado Springs Friday night at 6:05 p.m. (Pacific).
Rickie Weeks quickly gave the Sounds (23-25) their only lead with a two-run home run after Dave Krynzel was hit by a pitch to start the game.
The Beavers came out firing in the bottom of the first. Kerry Robinson led off with an infield single, while Furmaniak and Johnson followed with back-to-back, first-pitch home runs against Housman (2-3), who was lifted after three innings.
Portland pushed its advantage to 7-2 in the third, benefiting from Johnson's second home run, an RBI double by Hyzdu and Bumstead's two-run double, his first hit of the season.
Johnson has five home runs over his last seven games and became the first Portland batter to log three extra-base hits in a game this season.
Steve Scarborough stroked a two-run home run in the top of the fourth while Hyzdu countered with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to complete the scoring.
Bumstead (1-1) gave up four runs on three hits and a pair of walks over 5.0 innings. Jack Cassel, who was promoted to Portland from Class AA Mobile on Thursday, made his Triple-A debut by striking out a pair over the final two innings.
NOTES: The next "baseball" event at PGE Park is the "Rock 'N Roll Doubleheader Tour," featuring Bryan Adams and Def Leppard on Wednesday, June 1. Tickets are available at area Ticketmaster outlets and the PGE Park box office ... Johnson is the third Portland batter to hit two home runs in one game this season, joining Jon Knott (twice) and Robert Fick. The last time Johnson had a two-homer game was Aug. 30, 2003, when he did so against High Desert while playing at Class A Lake Elsinore in the Padres system ... ... Brian Sweeney, who led the team in wins, starts, innings pitched and strikeouts last season before signing a free agent deal with Tampa Bay in the off-season, rejoined the Beavers on Thursday after he was recently granted his release from the Devil Rays ... Thursday's attendance was the second-largest of the season.
