Nashville Sounds News Release

PORTLAND – The Nashville Sounds wrapped up their eight-game road trip to the Pacific Northwest on the short end of an 8-4 decision against the Portland Beavers on Thursday evening at PGE Park in the finale of a four-game series.

With the loss, Nashville (23-25) finished its trip with a 2-6 mark and suffered its ninth defeat in the club's last 12 contests.

The Sounds managed only five hits on the evening, which was a forgettable outing for the heart of the order as the third through sixth hitters finished a combined 0-for-14.

Every Portland starter, including pitcher Mike Bumstead, recorded a hit in the contest, led by right fielder Ben Johnson's 3-for-4 effort that included a pair of home runs and a ground-rule double and former Sound Adam Hyzdu's 3-for-4, two-RBI evening.

Nashville second baseman Rickie Weeks returned from a two-day absence with a bang, spotting the Sounds a 2-0 lead with a two-run, first-inning homer off Bumstead. The blast, which scored Dave Krynzel who was hit by a pitch to lead off the ballgame, was Weeks' team-leading eighth of the season.

As was seemingly the case all series, the Beavers responded immediately to a Nashville outburst with one of their own in the bottom of the frame, using a pair of back-to-back longballs by J.J. Furmaniak and Ben Johnson to grab a 3-2 lead against Sounds starter Jeff Housman.

Portland broke the game open in the third, tallying four runs to take a commanding 7-2 advantage. Johnson led off with his second homer of the contest, a solo shot to left that was his seventh four-bagger of the year. Bumstead, the Beavers' starting pitcher, delivered the big blow in the frame when he ripped a two-run, bases-loaded double to left-center for his first knock of the season.

Housman (2-4) lasted only three innings for Nashville, surrendering seven runs on 10 hits, including three homers. He matched his season high with six strikeouts but drew a loss for the second consecutive start.

The home run barrage continued in the fourth when Sounds shortstop Steve Scarborough belted a two-out, two-run homer off Bumstead to score Ryan Knox and pull Nashville within 7-4. The tater, which extended Scarborough's hitting streak to a season-best five games, was the infielder's seventh of the campaign, placing him second on the club behind Weeks; he hit only four home runs in 112 games for Triple-A Indianapolis in 2004.

Like clockwork, the Beavers answered in the bottom of the frame against Nashville reliever Mike Meyers when Josh Barfield scored from first on Hyzdu's single to right-center. The RBI was the second of the contest for the ex-Sound, who earlier notched a run-scoring double during the four-run Portland third.

Nashville's best chance to get back into the game came in the top of the fifth when the Sounds left the bases loaded against Portland reliever Angel Tovar. After the first two batters were retired, Knox doubled, Scarborough was hit by a pitch, and pinch-hitter Corey Hart drew a walk to fill the bags before Krynzel flew out to end the frame.

Bumstead (1-1) earned his first victory of the season after allowing four runs on only three hits (two homers) over five innings of work for the Beavers.

The Sounds travel back to Nashville on Friday to open a four-game Memorial Day weekend homestand against the New Orleans Zephyrs (AAA-Nationals). Right-hander Rick Helling (2-2, 4.79) will start the 7 p.m. series opener at Greer Stadium for Nashville and face a yet-to-be-determined Zephyrs hurler.
