Iowa Tops Jacksonville for Second Straight Victory

Iowa Cubs News Release

JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Iowa Cubs (61-70) won a 3-1 matchup against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (69-61) on Wednesday night at 121 Financial Ballpark, giving them a 2-0 series lead.

Like the previous night's ballgame, Jacksonville seemed to have the advantage early. While the I-Cubs went hitless through their first three innings, the Jumbo Shrimp saw lots of traffic on the base paths in their half-innings. Anderson Espinoza was able to escape a bases-loaded jam in the first, however, then wiggled out of trouble again with the help of an outfield assist from Brennen Davis in the third.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning, when Levi Jordan led off with a double and came around to score on an RBI single from Jared Young. That gave the I-Cubs a 1-0 lead, which held until the sixth inning, when they added some insurance. Iowa once again took advantage of a leadoff double - this time from Darius Hill - to plate their second run of the game. A Jacksonville error aided their efforts in the frame, and the extra out gave Young time to drive in the third Iowa run with an RBI double.

On the other side, the pitching staff kept the Jumbo Shrimp's bats quiet through the middle innings. Espinoza handed things over to Bryan Hudson after four, and the lefty went on to log two hitless, scoreless frames. Cayne Ueckert and Danis Correa each logged a shutout inning of their own, leaving the score at 3-0 heading into the ninth.

From there, it was Ben Leeper's ballgame, and though he allowed a run on two hits, his effort was enough to secure the save for himself and the victory for the I-Cubs, who won by a final score of 3-1.

POSTGAME NOTES:

Levi Jordan extended his hitting streak to seven tonight, tying his season high. Esteban Quiroz (7) and Darius Hill (8) extended their streaks as well.

Tonight's start was Anderson Espinoza's first scoreless outing for the I-Cubs since his Triple-A debut on July 24.

Brennen Davis' four outfield assists are now tied for first on the active roster with Darius Hill, who has played more than twice as many games in the outfield as Davis has this season.

Ben Leeper secured his team-leading ninth save of the season with his one-run ninth inning.

Iowa will play the third game of their six-game series against Jacksonville tomorrow. First pitch between the I-Cubs and the Jumbo Shrimp is set for 6:05 CT. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
