Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (35-45) were beaten by the home run ball in their Friday night contest against the Indianapolis Indians (39-42), dropping a 12-8 game at Principal Park.

The Indians got off to an early start, scoring in the top of the first on a solo home run from Anthony Alford. The center fielder wasn't done, however, as he hit his second home run of the game in the third inning with a man on, giving Indianapolis an early 3-0 lead.

Indianapolis didn't slow down after that. They teed off on reliever Ryan Lawlor in the fifth inning, scoring seven earned runs on five hits, including two more home runs from Christian Bethancourt and Michael Chavis. Scott Effross took over for Lawlor and finally got Iowa out of the inning, but not before Indianapolis had taken an 11-0 lead.

Iowa's offense finally got started in the bottom half of the inning, as Nick Martini cracked an RBI double to drive in Ian Miller, and then Trayce Thompson hit his team-leading twelfth home run of the year to bring the score to 11-3.

Meanwhile, Iowa's bullpen finally managed to quiet the Indians' bats. Effross completed two and two-thirds scoreless innings and Rowan Wick completed one no-hit inning of his own in the eighth.

The I-Cubs kept climbing back, scoring two more runs in the eighth inning on Thompson's second homer of the night, which followed a Martini triple - his second of the series. Indianapolis and Iowa each got a final run in on a solo home run in the ninth inning and Iowa plated two more on a pair of singles and an error, but that was all they could manage. They lost their second straight to Indianapolis by a final score of 12-8.

POSTGAME NOTES:

Mike Hauschild gave up three home runs tonight, one shy of his season-high for a single outing.

Indianapolis set a new I-Cubs opponent season high with six home runs in tonight's game. Iowa had previously allowed five homers in a game four times this season.

Trayce Thompson's 2-for-3 night extended his hitting streak to five games, which ties his season high. He is hitting .615 (8-for-13) during that span.

Rowan Wick pitched a scoreless inning and struck out the side in order in the fourth outing of his Major League rehab assignment.

Iowa and Indianapolis will face off for the sixth of their seven game series tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 7:08. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
