Worcester Red Sox News Release

MOOSIC, P.A. - For the second straight night, the Worcester Red Sox (44-36) and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (48-29) went to the eleventh inning, and for the second game in a row, the WooSox grabbed a win, this time a 4-3 victory at PNC Field in a game that took four hours and 19 minutes.

The WooSox took the first lead of extras in the top of the tenth on a two-out RBI single by Jeremy Rivera, an 0-2 pitch laced up the middle that scored Josh Ockimey. SWB answered in the bottom of the frame with a Ryan LaMarre RBI double, the second straight inning in which the RailRiders got a game-tying hit while down to their last out.

That brought the game to the eleventh, where Worcester faced a position player, Brandon Wagner, who had entered to get the final out of the tenth. Yairo Muñoz began as the runner on second, and Delino DeShields blooped a single to push him to third. Joey Meneses was next and delivered a sac-fly to score Muñoz and put the WooSox on top 4-3.

That was the score as Matt Hall came out of Worcester's pen with Max McDowell as the automatic runner. Greg Allen led the bottom of the eleventh off with a bunt up the third base line, ended up safe at first and then stole second to put two in scoring position. Hall struck out two then walked a man to load the bases. With two outs in a 4-3 game, Estevan Florial was the batter, and Hall struck him out to close the road team's sixth win in seven games and second straight extra-innings victory.

The game began with Kyle Hart, and the left-hander tossed two innings of scorelesss ball in his first start since July 20. John Schreiber followed with another brilliant performance: four innings without a run, striking out five to tie his longest outing of the season.

Despite 11 hits in the first nine innings, Worcester's offense managed just two runs prior to extras. Both came home in the sixth, an inning that began with a double by Jett Bandy. Tate Matheny hit the next pitch, a ground ball that slipped up the middle, to score Bandy. Two pitches later, Jeremy Rivera ripped a double to left, and after a walk, Muñoz grounded a single past the shortstop that brought home Matheny. Muñoz extended his Red Sox Triple-A record hit streak to 28 games with the RBI knock that put the road team up 2-0.

Schreiber exited after six with the WooSox up 2-0, and SWB promptly put itself on the board. Working against reliever Marcus Walden, Thomas Milone blasted a solo home run over the centerfield wall to cut the deficit to 2-1.

After a scoreless eighth, Walden got two outs in the ninth then walked Milone to put the tying run on first. Luke Voit was next, and he hit a fly ball to shallow center that dropped between the centerfielder Delino Deshields and the infield. Milone sprinted around to make it 2-2, sending the game to extras, where Worcester took the victory.

Chris Sale takes the mound Saturday as the WooSox continue the six-game series at 6:05 p.m. against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. Radio coverage starts live at 5:45 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network.
