Iowa Learns Opponents for 2007-08 AHL Season

May 30, 2007 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Chops News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Stars, in conjunction with the American Hockey League offices in Springfield, Massachusetts, today released the divisional alignments and schedule frequency grid for the upcoming 2007-2008 AHL season. The 2007-08 schedule chart reveals that the Stars 80-game slate will again be dominated by West Division foes.

The AHL's Divisional alignment for next season has the Stars playing in the Western Conference's West Division for the third consecutive season. Iowa will square-off against West Division foes (Chicago Wolves, Houston Aeros, Milwaukee Admirals, Peoria Rivermen, Quad City Flames, Rockford IceHogs, and San Antonio Rampage) a total of 31 times at Wells Fargo Arena. Sixty-two of the Stars 80 games will come against those West Division rivals, with four home and four road contests featured against all except the Peoria Rivermen and Quad City Flames. Iowa will play the Quad City Flames 12 times, as was the case last season when the Calgary Flames had their AHL affiliate in Omaha, Nebraska. Instead of heading west on I-80, the rivalry will now head east on I-80 to the Quad Cities area. Peoria and Iowa have 10 scheduled games next season (five home/five road).

The Western Conference's North Division is comprised of the Grand Rapids Griffins, Hamilton Bulldogs, Lake Erie Monsters, Manitoba Moose, Rochester Americans, and Syracuse Crunch. The Stars will play Grand Rapids, Lake Erie, and Manitoba four times (two home/two road), while playing Hamilton, Rochester, and Toronto twice (one home/one road). The Lake Erie, Quad City, and Rockford teams are all playing in their inaugural seasons.

Last season, Iowa faced 12 different opponents, this season that number will increase to 13 teams. The Hamilton Bulldogs and Toronto Marlies will see a League-high 19 teams, while the Lowell Devils and Peoria Rivermen will play a League-low 12 teams. The Stars will have seven games in the Eastern Time Zone when they visit Cleveland, OH (2-Lake Erie), Grand Rapids, MI (2); Hamilton, Ontario (1); Rochester, NY (1); and Toronto, Ontario (1). The West Division increases to eight teams, while the North Division jumps to seven teams.

A full schedule, with dates and opponents, as well as the playoff format is expected to be released by the AHL in the weeks following the conclusion of the June summer meetings.
