Columbia Inferno News Release
COLUMBIA, S.C. (March 19, 2008)-The Columbia Inferno (30-26-4-6, 70 points) beat the visiting Pensacola Ice Pilots (16-40-3-5, 40 points) 4-3 in a shootout on Wednesday evening to win their second consecutive game and third of their last four.
Mac Faulkner gave the Inferno a 1-0 lead three minutes into the game when he took a pass from Jeremy Schenderling in the far corner and beat Ice Pilots goalie Cam Ellsworth with a low shot from the mid-slot. It was Faulkner's 15th goal of the year. The Ice Pilots evened the score at 11:23 when Michael Cohen took a pass from Tim Songin and weaved through the Inferno defense to beat Todd Ford high glove side for his 10th goal of the year.
The Inferno reclaimed the lead two minutes into the second period when Julien Brouillette received a pass from Daniel Sparre and hammered a heavy slapshot over Ellsworth's glove. The Ice Pilots again knotted the score, this time 2-2, when Adam Hobson rifled the puck from the slot up and over Ford's blocker four minutes into the third. Steve McJannet put the Inferno up 3-2 at 9:45 of the third in an odd play. Dan Glover smacked a shot off Ellsworth's shoulder, prompting the goalie to look behind the net for the puck. McJannet then dove in the crease and tapped the loose puck past a bewildered Ellsworth for his 15th goal of the season. It looked as if the Inferno lead would hold, but the Ice Pilots again tied the game, as Patrick Bordeleau wrapped the puck around Ford from behind the net at 13:05.
The two clubs skated through the rest of the third period and overtime at deadlock, prompting the shootout. Bordeleau and Hobson, the Ice Pilots first two shooters, both beat Ford, but Jeremy Hall, Sparre and Faulkner all beat Ellsworth to give the Inferno a 3-2 shootout advantage and thus the 4-3 victory. The Inferno return to the Carolina Coliseum on Saturday, March 22 to host the Pensacola Ice Pilots at 7:05 p.m. 2008 Kelly Cup Playoff tickets, group tickets, fundraisers and the coolest birthday parties in town are all available by calling 803.256.7825 or by logging on to columbiainferno.com.
