Alaska Aces News Release

LAS VEGAS - In a match-up of division leaders, Ryan Donally snapped a 2-2 deadlock with 9:45 remaining in regulation, giving Las Vegas its first win over Alaska this season, 3-2, in front of 4,554 at Orleans Arena.

The two clubs had met over the weekend of February 22-24 in Anchorage, and in all three games, Las Vegas had scored first, only to see Alaska rally and ultimately prevail in a shootout. Tuesday, the Aces struck first, as Josh Soares buried his seventh goal in five games (and his 32nd of the year) off the rush at 3:48 of the opening frame. The Wranglers rallied to take a brief lead in the second period, on a tip-in by Kelly Czuy at 3:14, and a wrist shot from point blank range by Nathan Barrett with 8:25 left in the period. But six minutes later, with Alaska on the power play, Soares flicked a centering pass to Brett Hemingway, who slammed home his 20th goal of the season (and 10th in 18 games for the Aces) for the equalizer, leaving the score tied 2-2 with 20 minutes to play.

The winner came on another tip-in, with Las Vegas on the power play. Aaron Power ripped a drive that was deflected by Donally past a screened Beckford-Tseu, who absorbed just his third defeat in 37 regular season starts (32-3-2) for Alaska. The Aces had a pair of power play opportunities in the waning moments, and Michael Lambert hit a crossbar, but failed to draw even in suffering just their third loss in 19 games and their second over the previous 11 on the road.

Alaska's West Division lead remains at two points over idle Victoria and Idaho. The loss also marked just its fourth in 28 games against Pacific Division teams. The Aces (37-22-5) practice tomorrow and complete their three-game series with the Wranglers Thursday and Friday night at 6:00 p.m. ADT. Both contests will be broadcast live on AM 750 KFQD, with coverage beginning 15 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
