Grand Rapids, Mich.-The Chicago Blackhawks announced on Friday that the National Hockey League club has signed defenseman Garnet Exleby to a one-year contract and have loaned him to the American Hockey League's Rockford IceHogs.

Exelby had been skating under a PTO contract with Rockford and was released from that agreement on Thursday to sign the deal with the Blackhawks. The St. Anne, MAN native serves as the IceHogs team captain.

The 29-year-old veteran defenseman has played in 408 career NHL games, including 357 with the Atlanta Thrashers. Exelby was Atlanta's eighth round pick (#217 overall) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Last season Exleby spent his loan campaign in Toronto with the Maple Leafs, appearing in 51 games and chipping in a goal and three assists.

In 18 games with Rockford in 2010-11, the IceHogs' team captain ranks second on the club with 49 penalty minutes.

Next Home Game: Saturday, Nov. 27 vs. Peoria Rivermen. Puck drop is at 7:05 p.m. The first 2,500 fans will receive a Jack Skille Bobblehead courtesy of Dental Dimensions and WIFR. The game is the fifth overall on the season between the IceHogs and Rivermen.
