Worcester IceCats News Release

WORCESTER, MA - The American Hockey League (AHL) today announced the 24-man Canadian roster for the upcoming 2003 Dodge AHL All-Star Classic at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine and the squad included Worcester IceCats forward Justin Papineau. Yesterday afternoon, forwards John Pohl and Sergei Varlamov were selected to skate for the PlanetUSA Team.

Selected to the Canadian All-Star team by a committee of AHL coaches, this is Papineau's second AHL All-Star Classic selection in as many years. In last season's AHL All-Star Classic he registered one goal and two assists: (1/2/3). The Ottawa, Ontario native has accumulated 15 goals and 13 assists in 26 games with Worcester this season: 26(15/13/28). He has also put together a nine game scoring streak in which he garnered eight goals and seven assists: 9(8/7/15). Despite missing 11 games, he is ranked third on the IceCats. Pohl and Varlamov are one and two, respectively.

Selected by the St. Louis Blues with their 3rd choice, 75th overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Justin established several IceCats franchise records last season. Along with current St. Louis Blue Eric Boguniecki, Papineau led the IceCats and the AHL with 38 goals. Of those 38 markers, 14 came on the power play, establishing another IceCats season record. The 22 year-old centerman holds the team record for the two quickest goals for not only the team, but also power play and by the same player - :07 on October 19, 2001 vs. the Hershey Bears. He finished sixth in overall AHL scoring with 76 points last season. Now in his third season with Worcester, his IceCats totals reflect 144 games, 60 goals and 73 assists: 144(60/73/133). He ranks fourth all-time in IceCats regular season scoring.

The Canadian team is made up of AHL players born in Canada. AHL fans determined the starting lineup via on-line balloting, while a committee of AHL coaches selected the remainder of the roster. A full roster can be viewed at worcestericecats.com and theahl.com.

The 2003 AHL All-Star Classic begins Sunday, February 2nd with the Skills Competition at 8:00 PM EST. The All-Star Game follows at 7:05 PM on Monday the 3rd. The game will be broadcast live in the United States on AHL regional television and on Rogers Sportsnet throughout Canada.

Also today, defenseman Matt Walker was recalled by the St. Louis Blues. Walker has appeared in 30 games with the IceCats this season, recording five assists and 50 penalty minutes. He ranks second on the IceCats with a 'plus 14' rating. This is the second appearance for the Beaverlodge, Alberta native with the IceCats NHL affiliate.

The IceCats are on the road for five straight games beginning with a pair in Saint John, New Brunswick tonight and Saturday. Worcester's next Centrum Centre game is on Wednesday, January 15th against the Springfield Falcons. Game time is 7:05 PM.
