January 3, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release

(PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 3, 2003) - Philadelphia Phantoms defenseman John Slaney was among the 21 skaters and three goaltenders named today to the Canadian team roster for the 2003 Dodge AHL All-Star Classic, to be held Feb. 2-3 at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine.

Slaney, who is making his fourth straight AHL All-Star Classic appearance, was also voted a starter via on-line fan balloting at www.theahl.com. He will be joined in the Canadian team starting lineup by Albany River Rats defenseman Ray Giroux, Milwaukee Admirals forward Darren Haydar, as well as goaltender Mathieu Garon and forwards Jason Ward and Benoit Gratton of the Hamilton Bulldogs.

The winner of the last two Eddie Shore Awards (AHL's top defenseman), Slaney is currently tied for sixth among all AHL defensemen in points (23) and ranks third in assists (20). He has appeared in all 32 games for Philadelphia this season and tops the team in assists, while placing second in points. Slaney also captured the Barry Ashbee Award as the Phantoms' best defenseman last season when he led the team in assists (39) and game-winning goals (6), tied for the club lead in points (59) and plus-minus (plus-12) and tied for second in goals (20).

Slaney, who served as captain of the Canadian AHL All-Star team last year, set an AHL record for goals in a season by a defenseman with 30 in 1999-2000. In 2000-01, he entered All-Star Weekend leading the league in scoring while serving as team captain for the host Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Slaney was then acquired by the Flyers organization the day before the All-Star Classic (for Kevin Stevens) and proceeded to collect a goal and two assists to earn game MVP honors.

The 30-year-old's five points in AHL All-Star play is the most of any defenseman in league history.

The 2003 Dodge AHL All-Star Classic gets under way on Sunday, Feb. 2, with the Pepsi AHL All-Star Skills Competition at 8:00 p.m. ET. The annual All-Star Game between the Canadian and PlanetUSA squads follows at 7:00 p.m. ET on Monday, Feb. 3 and will be televised live in the United States.

Philadelphia is in action at the First Union Spectrum tonight at 7:05 p.m. vs. the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Sunday at 5:05 p.m. against the Syracuse Crunch. Tonight's contest will be televised live on CN8.

Tickets to all Phantoms home games are $18, $17 and $13 for adults, and $8 for all children 14 and under, and are available now at the First Union Center box office and all Ticketmaster locations throughout the Delaware Valley. Tickets can also be charged by phone by calling (215) 336-2000 or (856) 338-9000 or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
