LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Ice Dogs couldn't have scripted a better season opener Friday night, en route to a 3-0 shutout of the San Diego Gulls. After the Gulls finished last season with the league's best record, they hit a brick wall against the newly revamped Ice Dogs.

Joe Cardarelli got things started for Long Beach, scoring on a power play goal 8:33 into the first period with assists from Marco Rosa and Mike Vellinga. Early into the second, Evan Cheverie put Long Beach ahead 2-0 with another power play goal, this time with assists from Trevor Read and Steeve Villeneuve. Marco Rosa closed out the scoring for the night, sealing the win for the Ice Dogs with an unassisted tally midway through the third.

Ice Dogs goalie, Chris Madden, was dominant making 31 saves and earning the shutout. Mathieu Chouinard of the Gulls made 24 saves in the losing effort. It was also the first victory for new head coach Malcolm Cameron since coming to Long Beach. Special teams appeared to be a strength for Long Beach, who went 2-6 on the power play and killed off all three San Diego man advantages.

The Ice Dogs will try to build on this game tomorrow night when they take on another talented division rival, the Las Vegas Wranglers. Game time is at 7PM and the first 7,500 fans in the building will receive Bam-Bam sticks, courtesy of Charter Communications.
