Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads swept its season-opening weekend series against the Alaska Aces Saturday night, defeating the Aces 4-2. The crowd of 4,327 saw rookie netminder Frank Doyle improve his professional record to 2-0. David Morisset continued to provide scoring leadership for Idaho, recording two more assists to bring his total to 4, and his point total to 5 in two games.

In the first period, Idaho tallied the lone goal after Morisset fed the puck from behind the net to Bobby Russell who knocked it by Aces goalie Lance Mayes for his second goal in as many games.

The Steelheads made it 2-0 early in the second period when Darren McLachlan gathered up the rebound from a Peter Metcalf shot and caught the open corner with a slap shot at 2:16. Idaho made it 3-0 on the power play when Darrell Hay snapped off a wrister from the left circle off a pass from Morisset at 11:21. Alaska scored just 37 seconds later, when Chris Heisten fired a low shot that got past Doyle. Alaska capitalized on a 4-minute power play when Mike Scott deflected Ryan Bast's shot from the left circle past a screened Doyle at 14:32 to draw Alaska to within 3-2.

The third period saw both teams fail to convert 5-on-3 power plays. Idaho added an insurance goal on a fluke play late in the period. Justin Cox fired a clearing pass from beyond center ice, and the puck took a funny bounce off the boards and cruised past Mayes, who had left his crease to play the anticipated carom. The unassisted goal at 16:47 was Cox's first in an Idaho uniform.

Doyle stopped 22 Alaska shots, while Mayes made 23 saves for the Aces. Idaho hits the road for the first time, playing three games in Fresno against the Falcons beginning Friday night.
