San Diego Gulls News Release

LONG BEACH, Calif. — The San Diego Gulls have owned the Long Beach Ice Dogs the last two seasons. But it was the Ice Dogs' night Friday, as they beat their Southern California rivals 3-0 in the season opener.

San Diego (0-1-0) entered the night with a 23-game unbeaten streak against the Ice Dogs, who last beat the Gulls in regulation on Oct. 26, 2002. But a strong power play and solid defensive corps ended the two-year drought, not to mention spoiled the head coaching debut of Martin St. Amour.

Marco Rosa led the way for Long Beach (1-0-0) with a goal and an assist. Netminder Chris Madden wasn't tested much, but was perfect when called upon, stopping all 31 shots.

Long Beach drew first blood 8:33 into the first period as Joe Cardarelli put home a power-play goal. The play was set-up by Rosa, who skated the puck behind the San Diego net. But instead of wrapping all the way around the net, Rosa dropped a pass to the near post, where Cardarelli banged it past Mathieu Chouinard.

Evan Cheverie notched another power-play marker 2:34 into the second, giving the Ice Dogs a two-goal cushion. Cheverie grabbed the puck along the right wing boards, cut around the San Diego defense and snapped a wrister over Chouinard's left shoulder.

The Ice Dogs had another chance with the man advantage late in the second, but only the stingy goaltending of Chouinard kept it a 2-0 game. On the other side the Gulls had a handful of offensive opportunites, but couldn't get anything past Madden.

Rosa put the game out of reach midway through the third period, taking advantage of a Gulls turnover. San Diego tried to skate the puck out of its zone, but Rosa stole it and buried a wrist shot.

Notes: The Gulls are now 22-1-1 in their last 24 games against Long Beach... They are 36-11-2 all-time against the Ice Dogs...
