Salmon Kings Fall 7-2 to Condors in Bakersfield

October 23, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

The Victoria Salmon Kings opened their inaugural season with a disappointing 7-2 loss against the Bakersfield Condors. The Condors attacked early and never let up in posting their first victory of the year.

The Salmon Kings were down quickly after giving up two goals inside the first minute. Bakersfield forward Mike Hofstrand scored at :18 when he took a centring pass from Todd Alexander and beat Salmon Kings netminder David Brumby to the short side. However just 41 seconds later Brad Mehalko took advantage of a Salmon Kings defensive lapse to put the Condors up 2-0, bringing the locals to their feet.

The Salmon Kings then killed off a rash of minor penalties before Victoria native Ryan Wade, the first player signed by Victoria, brought the Salmon Kings back with his first goal, an unassisted tally. The first period ended with the Salmon Kings down just a goal and looking to even the score.

The second period began with four straight Condor goals, including the second by Mehalko and a pair by Chris Twerdon, before starting goaltender David Brumby was replaced by rookie Jason Stone at 13:22 of the second period.

Stone and the Salmon Kings had a solid 3rd period allowing only the hat trick goal by Chris Twerdon at the 3:21 mark on 11 Condors shots.

The Salmon Kings continue their 3-game road trip tomorrow night with a return match-up against the Condors at 7:00 PM in Bakersfield followed by a 5:00 PM Sunday afternoon game against the Fresno Falcons before they return home to Victoria.
