Charlotte Checkers News Release

Charleston, SC - Saturday, October 23 - The Charlotte Checkers got a sudden-death overtime goal from winger Jason Dawe with 30 seconds left in the OT session for a 3-2 win over the South Carolina Stingrays Saturday night in Charleston. Rory Rawlyk slid a pass to right in front of the South Carolina goal to Dawe who flicked the puck by Stingrays goalie Kurt Daubenspeck for the game winner. Checkers goalie Alex Westlund made his second consecutive start and posted 22 saves to raise his record to 2-0.Charlotte starts the season at 2-0-0 as it begins the season with three straight road games.

"The guys played well again tonight but we still have things we need to work on," quoted Checkers coach Derek Wilkinson. "We didn't have as much sustained pressure as we did last night but in the third period the guys showed a lot of energy. It was nice to get the winning goal in the OT because I thought we had the better chances and got robbed a few times by their goalie. The Stingrays are a solid team with lots of speed so I'm happy to get a win."

Charlotte scored first just 1:46 into the contest as Eddie Pershin banged home Allan Egeland's rebound for a 1-0 Checkers advantage. The Stingrays tied the game at 1-1 on a deflection by Matt Reid at 8:22, and then took the lead at 17:53 when Kevin Spiewak knocked home the puck from close range for a 2-1 South Carolina lead. There was some discussion by the officials as to whether Spiewak might have kicked the puck in. But after a brief consultation the goal was allowed to stand and the Stingrays took a 2-1 lead to the locker room after one period.

The Checkers tied the game in the second period as Matt Chandler backhanded a Ryan Cuthbert pass by Daubenspeck at 13:59 to tie the game at 2-2.

Charlotte out shot the Stingrays 20-17 through two periods. The two teams battled to a scoreless third period before Dawe's goal in overtime secured the victory for the Checkers.

Charlotte improves to 2-0-0 for four points while South Carolina's record stands at 1-0-1 for three points. Following the Checkers third and final game of a season-beginning road trip next Friday night at Columbia, Charlotte will stage its home opener on Saturday, October 30 at Cricket Arena at 7:00 p.m. when they'll host the Inferno.Tickets are available now through the Charlotte Checkers office by calling (704) 342-4ICE, through all TicketMaster locations, or on line through _www.TicketMaster.com_ (http://www.ticketmaster.com/) .
