Condors and SMG in Major Dispute
October 23, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, CA- In a private meeting today, a major dispute erupted between Bakersfield Condors President Matthew Riley and Centennial Garden General Manager Jim Foss. The altercation occurred when the topic of the team most likely to win the World Series arose.
Riley a life long Cardinals fan taunted Foss with barbs of past Cardinal glory. "This Series is a rematch of the 1967 Cardinals vs. Red Sox tilt, in which the Cardinals won in seven games. I vividly remember Bob Gibson striking out George 'Boomer' Scott to end game seven," said Riley, who was 10 months old at the time. "I see Albert Pujols leading them to victory again!" Riley was born and raised in the Midwest not too far from St. Louis.
Foss fired back, "After completing the greatest comeback in sports post season history, this team has reversed the curse and fate is on our side. Victory shall be ours." A life long Red Sox fan, Foss was born and raised in the Boston area.
As a result of this dispute, a wager was made. The loser of said bet will be forced to humble himself before the attendees of the November 6th Condors vs. San Diego hockey game. Wearing the winning team's jersey, the loser will take center ice during intermission and declare the winner's team World Champion. Following the declaration, the loser will then proceed to the club room patio and serve the winner dinner.
As both Riley and Foss are fiercely loyal to their teams, public taunts have persisted throughout the day. Chants of "1918" were heard coming from the Condors office. A poster stating "The Curse is Reversed" was hung in Foss's office.
The fate of the two sports fans will be decided starting Saturday night as the Boston Red Sox host the St. Louis Cardinals for game one of the 2004 World Series.
