
Gladiators Hold off Lynx, 4-3

The Gwinnett Gladiators held on for a 4-3 win in their season opener against the Augusta Lynx on Friday night after holding a 4-0 lead midway through the third period.
In his first professional game, Jeff Campbell tallied his first professional goal as he walked out from behind the Augusta net and flipped the puck past Lynx netminder Jason Saal to give the Gladiators the 1-0 lead. Joe Bourne and Mike Stathopoulous dug the puck off the wall and moved it along to Campell for the goal at 12:44 of the opening period.
After clanking the puck off the goal post earlier in the first period, Joe Bourne picked up an assist as Peter Flache deflected the defenseman's shot to give the Gladiators a two-goal lead. Chris Durno picked up an assist as he served up a wide open Bourne at the point just a 1:52 after Campbell's goal.
Rick Emmett picked up his first goal of the season midway through the second period as he took a drop pass along the blue line and walked into the slot untouched and ripped a snapshot past Saal. Stathopoulous added an assist on the goal at 9:21 of the period. Gwinnett took a 4-0 lead on Cam Brown's first goal of the season on the power play with 7:26 left in the middle stanza. Brown, wide open in the slot, took a feed from Jim Jackson in the slot and ripped a low slap shot on ice past Saal. Sam Ftorek also added an assist on the power play goal.
Following the goal, Augusta pulled Saal in favor of Matus Kostar in an effort to energize the Lynx. It worked as Matt Dzieduszycki slipped past a Gladiators defenseman and beat Gwinnett netminder Adam Berkhoel on a breakaway. Todd Bennett and Louis Goulet picked up the assists on the Lynx tally at 16:55 of the second period. Augusta cut into the Gladiators lead in the third period as Josh St. Louis flipped a rebound past Berkhoel at 3:31 of the third period. Sean Connelly added an assist on the goal.
Augusta could get no closer than Ken Magowan's tally as he deflected a snapshot past Berkhoel at 11:07 of the third period. Goulet and Chris Hajt added the assists on the goal.
Berkhoel make multiple key saves down the stretch to preserve the win for the Gladiators making 30 saves in the win for the Gladiators.
The Gladiators are back in action tomorrow as they travel to Columbia to take on the Inferno in a 7:30 p.m. faceoff.
