October 23, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gladiators held off a late charge for the second night in a row to win their second straight game as they used shootout goals by Chris Durno and Brad Schell to knock off the Columbia Inferno 4-3 on Saturday night at the Carolina Coliseum.
For the second straight night, the Gladiators jumped out to an early lead. Jeff Campbell jammed a loose puck past Columbia netminder Rob McVicar just 1:04 into the first period to give the Gladiators the lead. Cam Brown picked up an assist on the goal.
Columbia knotted the score at one, seconds after an Inferno penalty expired. Brad Ralph jumped out of the penalty box, picked up a loose puck and fed Alenandre Burrows in the slot to set up the Inferno tally. Burrows buried the puck past Gladiators netminder T.J. Aceti at 8:06 of the period.
Mike Vigilante regained the lead for the Gladiators at the 11:07 mark of the second period with his first goal of the season. Picking up a loose puck in the corner, Vigilante walked untouched into the slot and flipped the puck off the crossbar and past McVicar for the unassisted tally.
With 20 seconds left in the second period, Cam Brown's second goal of the season gave the Gladiators a 3-1 lead heading into the second intermission. Brown took a centering pass in the left wing circle from Jeff Campbell and slid into the slot and ripped a shot that McVicar got a piece of past the netminder. Mike Stathopolous also added an assist on the goal for the Gladiators.
Columbia tied the contest up in the third with two goals, the first at the 7:38 mark of the period as Bryson Busniuk's shot took a weird bound and beat Aceti to cut the Gladiators lead to a goal. Burrows added an assist on the goal.
With McVicar pulled in favor of an extra attacker, Columbia was able to send the contest to overtime as Burrows was able to tally the equalizer, unassisted, at 18:51 of the third period.
The Gladiators couldn't capitalize on a 5-on-3 power play with less than two minutes in overtime sending the contest to a shootout.
T.J. Aceti earned the win in net for the Gladiators making 35 saves in the contest.
The Gladiators travel to Florida to take on the Everblades on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
