Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings announced today the signing of Forward Mark Olafson and Defenseman Mark Ashton from the Lethbridge Hurricanes (WHL).
"We are excited that these two young players have come to Victoria for our final weekend," said Dan Belisle, V.P. of Hockey Operations and General Manager for the Salmon Kings, "both of them are coming off a strong career with the Hurricanes, and are heavily scouted prospects."
Olafson, 21, was selected by the Washington Capitals in round #9 (279 overall) of the 2003 NHL entry draft. The native of Winnipeg, Manitoba began his stint in the WHL with the Kelowna Rockets in 2002. Over two seasons with the Rockets, Olafson posted 27 points (9 goals, 18 assists) in 91 games in the regular season, and six points in 19 playoff games.
The 6'0" 220-lb Winger joined the Lethbridge Hurricanes in 2003. He earned 39 points (18 goals, 21 assists) in 60 games of the 2005/2006 regular season.
Ashton, 20, is a five year veteran of the WHL, having played with the Hurricanes and the Vancouver Giants. From 2001-2003, the native of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta played 129 games with the Giants before joining the Hurricanes.
The 6'0" 198-lb Defenseman tallied 29 points (5 goals, 24 assists) in his last two seasons with Lethbridge.
"We are continuing to build our program for next season with a focus on Major Junior and University Division One graduates, and we are excited to give Mark Olafson and Mark Ashton an opportunity to play professional hockey," added Belisle.
The Victoria Salmon Kings play their final two games of the 2005/2006 season on Friday, April 7th and Saturday April 8th. The puck drops at 7:00 p.m. at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
