Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Bowling Green Hot Rods (15-9, 53-39) fell just short in a come-from-behind effort against the Cedar Rapids Kernels (16-7, 56-35) during a 7-6 loss at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Andrew Toles came within one hit of hitting for the cycle for the second time in this road trip. Toles collected a single, a double, a triple, two runs scored, and one run batted in.
Toles helped the Hot Rods grab an early lead in the top of the first inning. Toles collected a triple on the second pitch of the ballgame to start the quick rally. Tyler Goeddel scored Toles on a groundout to shortstop for a 1-0 lead. Leonardo Reginatto doubled and came in two batters later after Marty Gantt hit a double of his own.
Cedar Rapids responded with seven straight runs to take the lead. After scoring one run in the bottom of the first, the Kernels took a 4-2 lead during the third, featuring a go-ahead two-run home run by Jorge Polanco. Cedar Rapids added to the advantage during the sixth inning. The Kernels scored three runs to bring the lead to 7-2 while rattling off four straight base hits in the frame.
Bowling Green's big rally came in the seventh. Like Cedar Rapids in the previous inning, Bowling Green went back-to-back-to-back-to-back with base hits. Ryan Dunn reached on an error before Brandon Martin tripled him in. Martin scored due to a single by Toles. When Goeddel followed the single, it put two runners on base for Reginatto. Reginatto followed a successful double steal with a two-run single that cut the difference to 7-6.
The Hot Rods still had a pair of chances to tie the game but they were both shut down by the Kernels. Reginatto reached third base during that seventh inning rally and stayed there after an inning-ending fly out. Bowling Green was retired in order in the eighth before another opportunity in the ninth. Toles hit a one-out double but was caught stealing third on a close play. Goeddel gave the Hot Rods another chance with an infield single before Tyler Jones closed his ninth save on a strikeout.
The series finale between Bowling Green and Cedar Rapids is set for Monday at 12:05 PM CDT. Hot Rods RHP Taylor Guerrieri (6-2, 2.08) and Kernels RHP Jose Berrios (5-4, 3.53) are scheduled in a battle of top pitching prospects. Chris Kleinhans-Schulz will be on the call starting at 11:35 AM CDT on the Forever Communications Pregame Show on the Hot Rods Radio Network (1340 "The Ticket" WBGN-AM, 1340wbgn.com, and on the TuneIn Radio website and app).
