Kane County Cougars News Release

Comstock Park, MI - The Kane County Cougars could not overcome a four-run first inning by the West Michigan Whitecaps in a 5-2 loss on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Righty Scott Baker (L, 0-1) started for the Cougars (4-18, 34-54), making his first rehab appearance having been sidelined by Tommy John surgery since April 2012. Baker's outing got off to a rough start after allowing a pair of one-out singles. Jason King then drove a two-run triple off the right field wall before Lance Durham uncorked a two-run blast to give the Whitecaps (12-11, 45-48) a 4-0 lead.

Baker worked around two singles in his next two innings finishing after three frames. He allowed six hits, walked one and struck out two on 56 pitches.

Whitecaps starter Endrys Briceno (W, 5-6) worked five innings and allowed eight hits. In the fourth, the Cougars cut their deficit in half when Giuseppe Papaccio reached on a throwing error to extend the inning with two outs. Carlos Escobar followed with a two-run homer just over the left field wall. That would be all the offense that the Cougars could must as they left 10 men on base and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Lefty Michael Heesch worked out of the bullpen and tossed four scoreless frames. He allowed just two hits and struck out three.

Corey Knebel (S, 3) nailed down the game for the Whitecaps by tossing a scoreless ninth frame.

The Cougars close a three-game series against the West Michigan Whitecaps on Monday night from Fifth Third Ballpark at 6:00 p.m. central time. Felix Pena (2-3) will start for the Cougars. Left Jordan John (5-3) will be on the mound for West Michigan. The Cougars return to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Wednesday, July 17, to take on the Great Lakes Loons at 6:30 p.m. For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
