River Bandits Even Series with 9-2 Win over Dragons

Davenport, Iowa-Bobby Borchering collected three hits and drove in three runs to lead the Quad Cities River Bandits to a 9-2 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Sunday evening. The two clubs have split the first two games of the three-game series.

Quad Cities' Mark Appel, the first overall selection of the 2013 draft by Houston, made his Midwest League debut as the River Bandits starting pitcher. He worked four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

The River Bandits scored two runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth to jump out to a 4-0 lead. They added a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to extend their lead to 7-0 before the Dragons got their scoring started in the seventh on Jeff Gelalich's RBI double. The Dragons scored again in the eighth on Gelalich's sacrifice fly to make it 7-2, but Quad Cities picked up two in the bottom of the eighth to close out the scoring.

Dayton starting pitcher Jackson Stephens (0-4) worked four innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits with one walk and three strikeouts to take the loss.

The Dragons finished with just five hits. Beau Amaral was 3 for 5 to lead the way. Gelalich was 1 for 3 with a double and two runs batted in.

The Dragons fell to 12-12 in the second half with the loss, three games out of first place in the Midwest League Eastern Division. Quad Cities improved to 13-9 as they snapped a four-game losing streak.

The Dragons battle the River Bandits on Monday at 2:00 p.m. (EDT) in the last game of the series and the wrap-up to the Dragons six-game road trip. Drew Cisco (3-5, 3.74) will start for Dayton against Quad Cities' Colton Cain (4-5, 4.54). The Dragons are 3-2 on the trip so far.

The Dragons next home game is Wednesday, July 17 against the Beloit Snappers. All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at daytondragons.com and wone.com.

Notes: Tanner Rahier, the Dragons third baseman in 58 games this season, made his first professional appearance at shortstop. He played all nine innings at shortstop but did not have a defensive chance.
