Chiefs Bounce Back to Even Series, 13-4

Midland, MI- The Peoria Chiefs rebounded from Saturday's shutout to tie a season-high in runs scored during a 13-4 win over the Great Lakes Loons on Sunday afternoon. Down 3-1 after four innings, the Chiefs scored in four of the final five frames to improve to 11-12 on the second half and 49-41 overall.

The Chiefs jumped out on top in the second inning against Brandon Martinez. With one out, Breyvic Valera walked and Nick Martini singled. A force out of Martini put runners on the corners and Valera scored when third baseman Brandon Dixon couldn't throw to first in time after diving to knock down a hot smash by Gerwuins Velazco.

Great Lakes took the lead in the third against Brad Watson. Jeremy Rathjen led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Jose Capellan. Robbie Garvey tied the game with a single to center and Kevin Taylor sacrificed both runners up one base. The Chiefs plan to walk Corey Seager intentionally to load the bases back fired when Tyler Ogle also walked, forcing home Capellan for a 2-1 Loons lead. An error on Ildemaro Vargas at second base put the Loons up 3-1 before Watson induced a double play to end the inning.

The Chiefs got even in the fifth with a rally of their own. Charlie Tilson singled with one out and scored without a throw when Jacob Wilson doubled to right-center. Jordan Walton pulled a double down the right-field line to score Wilson and tie the game before Martinez got out of the inning with a pop up and ground out.

Two innings later the Chiefs took advantage of mistakes by Great Lakes to grab the lead. Tilson reached on an error by Seager at shortstop and stole second. He moved to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch by Steven Griggs for a 4-3 Chiefs lead. In the eighth inning, Vargas walked with one out, stole second and moved to third when the throw went into center field. He scored on an infield single by CJ McElroy to put the Chiefs on top 5-3.

Great Lakes got one run back in the eighth but couldn't get even. Seager and Ogle both walked against Sam Tuivailala, with Ogle reaching one pitch after Valera dropped his foul pop up to third base. Both runners moved up on a groundout to first and Zach Russell took over for Tuivailala. Russell struck out Dixon but a wild pitch scored Seager to cut the Chiefs lead to 5-4. With the tying run at third, Russell struck out James Baldwin III to end the threat.

Peoria put the game away in the ninth with their second huge inning of the road trip. Walton and Jeremy Schaffer led off with walks against Luis Meza and after fouling off two sacrifice attempts, Valera singled home Walton. Martini doubled home two for an 8-4 lead and with one out, Velazco singled off the wall as Martini scored. McElroy walked and Tilson drove home Velazco with a single. Crayton Bare replaced Meza and got the second out before Walton launched a three-run homer into the right-field berm to put the Chiefs on top 13-4. Walton's home run, his third of the season, was the first for the Chiefs on this road trip and ended the scoring in the 13-4 Chiefs win.

Watson (2-2) earned his second straight win with three runs allowed on six hits over six innings. He struck out four and walked three, one intentionally. Tuivailala struck out three and allowed one run on two walks and no hits over 1 1/3 innings. Russell earned his second saves with four strikeouts over 1 2/3 perfect innings.
