
Kernels Hold off Hot Rods

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels won their third straight game with a 7-6 win over Bowling Green on Sunday at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Bowling Green jumped ahead 2-0 early in the first inning with three extra-base hits. Andrew Toles led off the game with a triple, and he came home on Tyler Goeddel's RBI groundout. Leonardo Reginatto then doubled and scored on Marty Gantt's RBI double.
Mason Melotakis started for the Kernels, and the two runs he allowed in the first inning were the only runs he gave up on the day. Melotakis (7-3) went six total innings and allowed two runs on five hits for the victory. He struck out two and walked none.
The Kernels cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the first inning, making the score 2-1. Jonathan Murphy led off the inning with a walk, went to third base on a Dalton Hicks double, and scored on Adam Brett Walker's RBI sacrifice fly.
In the third inning Jorge Polanco put the Kernels in front 3-2 with a two-run home run to left field. Polanco's fourth homer of the season scored Murphy, who had singled to begin the inning. Walker then doubled and scored on Joel Licon's RBI double, putting the Kernels up 4-2.
The Kernels scored three more runs in the sixth inning with four straight hits to push ahead 7-2. Licon singled and Michael Quesada doubled to put two men on. Jeremias Pineda reached on a RBI infield single to plate Licon. Then, Murphy drove in a pair with a two-RBI double that landed just inside the left field line.
The Hot Rods trimmed the Kernels lead to 7-6 in the seventh inning by scoring four times. Brandon Martin's RBI triple scored Ryan Dunn, who reached on an error by Kernels third baseman Travis Harrison. Toles brought Martin home with a RBI single. Goeddel then singled to put two men on. Reginatto's two-run double cut the Kernels lead to one run.
Alex Muren pitched in relief for the Kernels and allowed four runs (three earned) over 0.1 inning. He struck out one and walked none. David Hurlbut pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen as he allowed one hit while striking out one. Tyler Jones improved to 9-for-9 in save opportunities by going 0.2 inning. The Kernels pitching staff did not walk a Bowling Green batter.
Jordan Harrison (1-2) started for Bowling Green and lasted 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits in the loss. He struck out five and walked three. Jose Molina went 3.1 innings in relief, allowing three runs on six hits. Nick Sawyer struck out the only batter he faced out of the bullpen.
