Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Fort Wayne, IN - Jason McEachern, Scott Shuman, and Deivis Mavarez combined for ten strikeouts on Monday night in Fort Wayne, but the Hot Rods managed just one hit in a 2-0 loss to the TinCaps. Ty Morrison broke up the potential no-hitter in the ninth, but he was thrown out at second base for the final out of the game. Fort Wayne has taken the first three games of the series heading into the finale on Monday night.

Fort Wayne got its only runs in the game against McEachern during its second time through the batting order. With one out in the third, Danny Payne singled to left before Jeudy Valdez hit a 3-2 pitch for a towering home run to left field to put Fort Wayne on top 2-0. The homer was the 20th allowed by McEachern this season, his 14th in his last eight starts.

McEachern settled down after that, allowing just two hits the rest of the way. He worked five full innings, scattering five hits while allowing two runs. He walked just one batter and finished his night with five strikeouts.

Meanwhile, the Hot Rods were having a bear of a time against Fort Wayne's left-handed pitchers. Starter Jose De Paula pitched the first three innings perfectly, retiring all nine men he faced. He gave way to Josh Spence, who continued with three hitless innings of his own.

The TinCaps brought on a third lefty, Jeff Ibarra, to begin the seventh inning with their 2-0 lead. He retired the side in order to give way to Stiven Osuna for the eighth. The first right-hander for the TinCaps allowed a one-out walk to Brett Nommensen before striking out Mark Thomas. Nommensen stole second during the next at-bat, but Julio Cedeno ended up grounding out to third base to retire the side.

In the ninth, Jackson Quezada came on to complete the no-hit attempt. He retired the first two batters on a pop-out and a groundout, but then gave up a single to Morrison. The Hot Rods centerfielder tried to stretch it into a double and was thrown out at second base to end the game with Tyler Bortnick on-deck.

Nommensen's steal was a milestone swipe for Bowling Green. His 26th of the season pushed the Hot Rods season total to 200. That mark not only leads the Midwest League, but is the most in all of Minor League and Major League Baseball.

The Fort Wayne pitching effort overshadowed a nice outing by reliever Scott Shuman. After struggling on Saturday night with a blown save, he pitched two scoreless frames, allowing a double while striking out five men.

The Hot Rods and TinCaps now meet up for the final time in Fort Wayne on Tuesday night. RHP Kirby Yates (3-6, 3.30) gets the ball in the series finale against LHP Pedro Hernandez (3-3, 3.86). First pitch is at 6:05 PM. You can listen to the game with Tom Gauthier beginning at 5:50 PM CDT on 1340 AM WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.

The Hot Rods return home to begin an action-packed six-game home stand on Wednesday night against the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers) and the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers).
