(Toledo, OH) A standing room only crowd of 8,200 watched Jeff Lerg post 34 saves in a 4-1 win over Wheeling Saturday night at the Huntington Center. Toledo has an overall record of 17-7-1-3 and 6-2-0-1 at home.
Toledo struck first when Scott Czarnowczan (2nd) found the back of the net for a power play goal at 3:50 of the first period. Alden Hirschfeld found Josh Shalla (6th) who buried a wrist shot at 2:23 of the second period to push the Walleye lead to 2-0.
In the third period, newcomer Tyler Maxwell scored his first goal in a Walleye uniform by tapping a rebound past Wheeling goaltender Franky Palazzese at 5:56. Dominic Zombo (4th) sent a perfect wrist shot into the top right corner of the net at 13:10 to push the Walleye lead to 4-0. The Nailers did sneak one past Jeff Lerg at 19:59 of the third period.
Walleye Notes: Goaltender Jeff Lerg made his seventh straight start stopping 34 of 35 shots and has a record of 12-3-2. The goal by Dominic Zombo in the third ran his goal scoring streak to three straight games. Toledo finished one of two on the power play. Tonight's sellout was the fourth of the season for the Walleye. Walleye Transactions: Prior to the game forward Tyler Maxwell was acquired by the Walleye from the Elmira Jackals to complete the trade from prior to the season involving defenseman Kevin Clare. Maxwell spent most of this in Alaska where he had four goals and 8 assists. Last year the 24 year old forward spent all year in Stockton with 63 games played, scoring 24 goals with 27 assists.
