Norfolk Admirals News Release

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Admirals gave up five goals to post a defeat to the Stingrays Saturday night at South Charleston Coliseum, 5-2.

The Stingrays struck first with a goal from Jared Staal at 3:05 in the opening frame. Stephan Vigier carried the puck back behind Norfolk's net, where he then deposited it out in front to Staal, who tapped it in. Staal and Vigier teamed up again to convert for South Carolina, this time with Vigier hitting net and Staal was credited with the helper. Staal cut through the Admirals' zone and threw a pass across to the left post. Vigier was there to shove it in at 6:16, putting the Stingrays up 2-0 at the end of the first period.

Just 3:13 into the second, the Stingrays gained the three-goal advantage when Vigier tallied his second goal of the night on their power play opportunity. Andrew Rowe took the puck from behind the goal line to make an attempt that was denied by Norfolk netminder Adam Courchaine. Vigier collected the deflection to hit twine, upping the score 3-0 and causing the Admirals to swap Courchaine for goalie Nic Riopel.

Norfolk finally made their mark on the board after capitalizing on their man-advantage at 11:19 in the middle frame. Alexandre Ranger took a shot from the slot, shredding his stick in the process, that beat Branden Komm past his left pad to edge the Admirals 3-1. At 18:00, Jonathan Lessard closed the gap, 3-2, when he fired one in from the backdoor. Ranger drove the puck across the zone to find Lessard who threw it in from the left side, putting the score 3-2 at the end of the second period.

South Carolina snapped a scoreless 17 minute final period with their fourth goal of the night after Paul Rodrigues tipped his wrap around pass out in front to Perrier, who swatted it in at 17:36. Norfolk pulled Riopel for the extra attacker, but the Stingrays responded with an empty-netter at 18:21 from Rowe, putting the final score 5-2.

Credited with the loss was Courchaine, who managed to save 12 of 15 attempts when he was in the crease, with Riopel blocking 17 of 18 shots during his time between the pipes. Komm got in front of 17 of Norfolk's 19 total drives on net. Both teams were able to convert on one of their four power play opportunities.

The Stingrays will host the Admirals again Sunday afternoon at 3:05 p.m.
