Hockey-Thon Brings in Over $23,000 for Link to Life

Bakersfield Condors News Release

Bakersfield, Calif. - The results are in from the first-ever Condors Hockey-Thon, which was held from March 25th - 26th at both the Rabobank Arena and the Bakersfield Ice Center. The 27-hour event brought in $23,381.70 for Link to Life, the local breast cancer resource center.

Organized by former Fog and Condors defenseman, and current color commentator, Kevin Barrett, the event included nearly 90 players, over three dozen 17-minute periods, countless donors and two Condors games as the Gwinnett Gladiators were in town for a two-game set. Individual participants were asked to solicit "sponsors" as an entry fee, the largest of which would receive prizes for their efforts.

"I want to thank the players," said Barrett. "Every player that showed up after the event began at midnight played in every game. Nobody wimped out. It all started with a vision to raise awareness for breast cancer and help a local resource center, to have it all come to fruition is a great feeling, but without the players we wouldn't have been able to do that. I'd also like to thank my wife, Amy, and all her volunteers for organizing everything off the ice.

"It was so much fun, we may have to do it again next year."

"We had an absolute ball and we look forward to next year!" said Sharyn Woods, CEO and founder of Link to Life. "They did such a great job of organizing and people they got to dedicate their time and energy was remarkable. We felt that it was fabulous extension for our outreach into our community."

The event brought great support from sponsors as well, including Cambridge Home Mortgage, American Business Machines and Action Sports, who sponsored the jerseys for the event. Island Style Grills and Barbeque donated a free island BBQ to Gordon Hosick, who collected over $2,100 as the individual leader. Brent Ilott finished second in the collections and won a round of golf for The Links at RiverLakes Ranch.

The Hockey-Thon culminated a series of charity events for the Condors over a one week span. The "Miracle on Ice" Jersey Raffle and Auction held on March 18th raised a team record $25,125 for the Petroleum Shrine Club and the annual Tip-A-Condor dinner on March 21st brought in a team record of over $15,000 for the Shriner's Hospital. The Help for the Homeless food drive the next night collected 1,003 pounds of canned goods. For the week, Condors events raised a total of over $63,000 plus the canned food for local charitable organizations.

The Condors return to home ice to host Idaho this Friday and Saturday night in the final two games of the regular season. In Friday's game, the Condors welcome Dora the Explorer to town to entertain the kids, courtesy of Bright House Networks and KLLY 95.3. On Saturday night, one fan will win a home makeover patio giveaway from Sunshine Sunroom and Patio, sponsored by KKET-TV 11 and KUZZ 107.9. Both games start at 7:00 p.m.

The opening round of the 2005 Kelly Cup Playoffs is scheduled to start on Tuesday, April 12th. The last spot in the West Division is still up for grabs with the Fresno Falcons trailing the fourth-place Condors by just two points in the standings.
