Gladiators Hold off Checkers, 3-2

Rick Emmett posted 2 assists and Adam Berkhoel made 32 saves to help the Gladiators past the Charlotte Checkers 3-2 on Tuesday night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center and move into 6th place in the American Conference playoff race.

Juris Stals opened the scoring midway through the first period beating Gladiators netminder Adam Berkhoel with a snapshot giving the Checkers a 1-0 lead. Rory Rawlyk and Darby Regan picked up the assists on the goal at 10:11 of the first period.

Gwinnett tied the game up with a power play goal with 4:02 remaining in the first period by Mike Stathopoulos. Rick Emmett ripped a slap shot from the left wing point that was deflected by Stathopoulos for the goal. Kevin Doell also picked up an assist on the goal.

Cam Brown gave the Gladiators their first lead of the night on the power play with a snapshot from the slot just 1:26 into the second period. Rick Emmett added his second helper of the night on the goal while Brad Schell chipped in an assist on the tally as well.

Jeff Campbell extended the Gladiators lead to 3-1 with his 30th tally of the season putting home the rebound of Adam Smyth's initial shot from the left wing circle. Kris Goodjohn also picked up the assist on the goal at 8:41 of the second period.

Charlotte cut the lead to a single goal with 56 seconds remaining in the third period jamming home a loose puck in the slot. Jason Dawe found the loose puck in the slot and flipped it past Berkhoel for the tally as Guard was pulled in favor of an extra attacker. Rory Rawlyk and Lee Falardeau picked up the assists for the Checkers on the goal but Charlotte could get no closer.

Adam Berkhoel finished with 32 saves in the win for Gwinnett as the Gladiators improve to 38-24-8 on the season. The Gladiators finished with 3 power play goals going 3-for-6 on the man advantage.
