Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Brandon Hicks' third home run in as many days-a go-ahead grand slam to left field-gave the River Cats a 6-3 victory over the visiting Salt Lake Bees on Thursday night at Raley Field.
With Dan Straily on the mound for his first River Cats start since July 28, the River Cats took a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning, with the lone run coming on a run-scoring double from the rehabbing Brandon Inge, scoring Jermaine Mitchell. The Bees scored once in the fourth on an RBI ground-out from Efren Navarro, and twice in the sixth on a two-run home run from John Hester, to take a 3-1 lead in to the middle of the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, Inge led off with a walk, followed by a Kila Ka'aihue single, moving Inge to second. The next batter, Michael Taylor, singled to right-center, loading the bases for Hicks. The River Cats shortstop hit a deep grand slam onto the Jackson Rancheria Home Run Terrace in left field, putting Sacramento on top, 5-3. Collin Cowgill would single-home Wes Timmons later in the frame, to put the River Cats ahead for good, 6-3.
Hicks finished 1-for-4 with four RBIs. Inge went 1-for-3 with a double, a run, an RBI, a walk and a strikeout, while Taylor was the only River Cat to record multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4 with a run and two strikeouts.
Straily took a no-decision, allowing one run with three hits, three walks and four strikeouts in five innings of work. Rich Thompson was the winning pitcher, giving up two earned runs in one inning of work, while Jeremy Accardo tossed a perfect ninth for his first save as a River Cat.
The victory drops Sacramento's magic number to five with 11 games remaining on their regular-season schedule.
Game three of the series will take place on a Toyota Family Friday that will also hold a Raley Field Fiesta. The 7:05 game will pit River Cats right-handed pitcher Bruce Billings (7-5, 3.93 ERA) against Bees righty Matt Shoemaker (9-9, 5.55 ERA).
Tickets for the River Cats' four potential 2012 home playoff games are available now at ticketmaster.com, over the phone at (916) 371-HITS and in person at Raley Field's Round Table Pizza Ticket Office.
