Iowa Cubs News Release
Des Moines, IA - The Cubs defeated the RedHawks 5-3 in a see-saw affair Friday night in front of 12,384 fans. In his second start as an I-Cub, Yoanner Negrin tossed six innings of three-run ball and surrendered eight hits, one walks and fanned four. The Cuban import did not factor in the decision. Oklahoma City (50-83) outhit Iowa (52-82) 8-6, despite falling to the Cubs.
Oklahoma City took an early lead for the second straight night, plating a run in the third on an RBI single by Jimmy Paredes. A fielder's choice followed by a wild pitch put Brian Bixler in scoring position to set up the play.
The I-Cubs scratched back in the fourth, taking advantage of a couple of OKC miscues. Tony Campana reached on a throwing error by the shortstop to start the frame and moved to second on a failed pick off attempt. Alfredo Amezaga walked and joined Campana in scoring position on a Gonzalez wild pitch.
Adrian Cardenas drove in Iowa's first run before the club recorded a hit, grounding out to second to knot the score at one. Jeff Frazier beat out an infield single for Iowa's first base hit and second run to provide a 2-1 advantage.
Oklahoma City regained the lead in the sixth scoring three runs on two hits and an untimely wild pitch for Negrin in the inning. Jay Jackson hurled a scoreless seventh to set up an Iowa rally for the bottom of the inning and earn the win. Jeff Frazier led off the frame with a blast off the wall in left. Diory Hernandez buzzed a liner back up the middle to tie the score at three. Campana legged out a triple on a deep fly to right center to give the Cubs their first lead. The centerfielder has now hit safely in six straight games.
Scott Maine pitched a perfect eighth. Adrian Cardenas provided Iowa with insurance, blasting a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the frame and bumping the lead to 5-3. Jairo Asencio closed the game with a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save in as many attempts. Edgar Gonzalez threw six innings without allowing an earned run, but Brian Sanches surrendered the tying and go-ahead runs in relief, suffering a blown save and the loss.
Iowa will try to make it two in a row tomorrow with their last 7:05 p.m. start of the season. RHP Ty'Relle Harris (1-3) toes the rubber for the Cubs against LHP Brett Oberholtzer (5-6) in game four of the five-game set.
