Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers fell behind early and never caught up in a 6-1 loss to the Las Vegas 51s in front of 6,452 fans at Cheney Stadium on Thursday night.
Las Vegas had Tacoma trailing for good after posting a two-run inning in the top of the second. Infielder Kevin Howard drove in Luke Hughes on an RBI-single with one out to give the 51s a 1-0 edge. Hughes added another run after scoring from third on a wild pitch.
Howard's solo home run in the top of the fifth stretched Las Vegas' lead to 3-0 before the Rainiers made a trip onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame. Outfielder Franklin Gutierrez hit a sacrifice fly that plated catcher Guillermo Quiroz to account for Tacoma's lone run.
Ricardo Nanita's two-RBI-single and an RBI-double hit by the infielder Hughes comprised a three-run inning for the 51s in the seventh.
Tacoma combined to collect six hits in the contest. Infielder Nick Franklin recorded the lineup's only multi-hit effort after going 2-for-5 with a double. Gutierrez, who is currently with the Rainiers on a Major League rehab assignment, ended the night going 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Starter Hector Noesi (1-5) was dealt the loss after surrendering three runs on eight hits over six innings in his ninth turn in the Rainiers rotation this season. The right-hander struck out six batters and issued a pair of walks on Thursday.
Left-handed reliever Brian Moran gave up three runs on two hits and two walks over 0.2 innings in the seventh. Right-handers Chance Ruffin (1.1) and Danny Farquhar (1.0) combined to strike out three over the game's final 2.1 innings.
The Rainiers (57-76) and 51s (74-58) play the third game of the five-game series against each other at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow, August 23. Left-handed pitching prospect Danny Hultzen (1-2, 4.35) is slated to start for Tacoma against left-hander Bill Murphy (5-5, 4.95) for Las Vegas.
