Tonight's Game-- The RedHawks look to win a third straight in Iowa as Edgar Gonzalez makes his team and organizational debut at 7:05 p.m.
Last Night-- Jose Cisnero fired six strong innings and drove in a pair of runs as the Redhawks dodged some late bullets to hang on for a 2-1 win over the I-Cubs. After a series of shaky starts, Ciserno (3-1) found his way Thursday, limiting Iowa to one run over six innings. He allowed three hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Cisnero helped himself by driving in a pair of runs with a two-out, two-run double in the second inning. Not only was it Cisnero's first career hit, but it came in his first at-bat since July 9. Iowa scored its first and only run in the fourth. Cisnero walked a pair to start the inning, and two batters later, Dave Sappelt knocked an RBI single to make it 2-1. The Cubs threatened in each of the final three innings. The potential tying run was thrown out at the plate in both the seventh and eighth. With one out in the ninth, Jim Adduci missed a game-tying home run by inches and would end up being stranded at third to end the game. Jose Valdez earned his 18th save for the RedHawks.
Tonight's Probable Pitchers-- Edgar Gonzalez makes his team and organizational debut...Just signed as a free agent, Gonzalez had most recently played for the Monterrey Sultans of the Mexican League, where he went 2-2 with a 2.84 ERA over six starts...He allowed two earned runs or less in five starts, including four outings allowing just one earned run...He was with Oakland during Spring Training, but released on April 3...Gonzalez was signed by the Rockies and sent to Colorado Springs, where he made 15 appearances, including seven starts, going 3-3 with a 5.40 ERA...Gonzalez has also logged time in the PCL with Albuquerque, Sacramento, and Tucson...He has made 107 career appearances in the Majors with the Diamondbacks, A's, and Rockies, posting a record of 14-25 with a 5.90 ERA...Along with Mark Hamburger, Gonzalez is the second RedHawks pitcher to join the team after facing them earlier in the season...Iowa starter Yoanner Negrin has a similar past...He is a recent addition to the team, making just his second start...Negrin spent most the season with the Tabasco Olmecas of the Mexican League, going 7-6 with a 3.12 ERA over 24 appearances (16 starts)...He made one start with Double-A Tennessee on August 12, firing five innings of one-hit ball...Negrin was promoted to Iowa and made his team debut Sunday against Memphis...He did not figure in the decision after allowing one run and six hits over four innings.
Doing More With Less-- The RedHakws won last night despite tallying only four hits. It tied their season-low for hits in a victory this season. (1-0 vs. Las Vegas, May 10; 2-0 vs. Nashville, May 29)
What Did You Expect?-- Last night's one-run decision should come as no surprise. These are two of the three teams that have played the most one-run games in the PCL. (Iowa first with 52; RedHawks third with 43.) Five of their 13 games have been decided by one run, with the RedHawks winning each time.
Angel in the Infield-- Despite having his 10-game hitting streak snapped, Angel Sanchez is still hitting .390 (23-for-59) over his last 17 games, hitting safely 15 times. Since the end of May he is batting .347.
Shuck-Tacular-- J.B. Shuck has hit safely in each of his last five games, batting .500 (9-for-18). The team had not drawn a walk in 25 straight innings until he took a free pass in the eighth last night.
Friend Turned Foe-- Former Iowa Cub Brad Snyder has hit three homers against his old squad this season. Each one has put the RedHawks in the lead in the sixth inning or later.
Super Bass-- Brian Bass is having an outstanding month, posting a 1.53 ERA over five outings (17.2 IP). Since moving to the bullpen, Bass has allowed one run and nine hits over 10.2 IP, including no runs over his last 9.1 IP.
Promising Pitching-- Although the pitching staff struggled a lot following the All-Star Break, it has vastly improved of late. Over the last 14 games the team ERA is 2.69 (38 ER/127 IP). The starters have turned in eight quality starts and posted a combined 2.52 ERA (23 ER/82.0 IP) with 52 strikeouts and 20 walks.
Keeping it in the Park-- The RedHawks have allowed just four dingers over the last 12 contests, spanning 110 IP.
RISP-y Business-- Over the last 14 games, the RedHawks have limited their opponents to a .167 average with runners in scoring position (26-for-156).
Climbing Back-- The Rehawks have been playing better of late, winning seven of their last 10 games. However, they have gone 12-22 since July 19. They went from leading the division by two games to dropping to third place and falling 5.5 games back of first. They're only hitting .244 over the last 27 games (8-19).
Against the I-Cubs-- The RedHawks are 11-2 against Iowa this season, including a 4-1 mark at Principal Park...The RedHawks have hit 17 homers while averaging 6.1 runs per game...Mike Hessman has torched the I-Cubs, hitting seven homers in 12 games with 12 RBIs...J.B. Shuck has hit .429 over 10 contests and has drawn seven walks, giving him a .571 on-base percentage...Former RedHawk Diory Hernandez has hit .400 in seven games against his old team...The RedHawks have won seven games by two runs or less, including five by one run...Each of Iowa's two wins have been shutouts.
