Buffalo Bisons News Release
The Bisons thought that they would enter the All-Star break in different fashion going into Sunday's game. But coming off of two big wins over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the Herd was held to two hits and one run in the 8-1 loss against the RailRiders at Coca-Cola Field.
Luis Severino and three Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders relievers held Buffalo to just two hits, knocking the Bisons back under the .500 mark at 45-46.
"He's good. He's probably pitching in the wrong league right now," said Bisons manager Gary Allenson of Severino.
One of the top prospects in the New York Yankees system, Severino allowed just two base runners through five innings. His only walk, a free pass to Ryan Schimpf to lead off the fifth, was quickly erased on a doubleplay. With the win, the righty improved to 5-0 with a 1.79 ERA.
However, it wasn't just Severino and his stellar start that held the Herd to a run. The RailRiders' bullpen managed to allow one more hit and the only run of the game for the Herd in the combined four innings pitched, adding two strikeouts.
"[They have the] Kansas City Royals bullpen of the International League," said Allenson.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre scored three runs in the third and fifth inning, knocking Bisons starter Daniel Norris out of the game and handing him his ninth defeat. Greg Bird hit a three-run home run after two infield singles to get the RailRiders on the scoreboard. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre strung five hits together in the fifth inning to score three more and put the game out of reach.
Buffalo scored their lone run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Schimpf.
The Bisons head into the All-Star break four games behind Rochester, who are in first place. "We're looking good right now. When we come back, we're gunna get after it," said Allenson
The Herd will take a well-deserved three days off before returning to Coca-Cola Field on Thursday for an eight-game homestand against Columbus and Syracuse.
Bisons Notes
Matt Hague had the only hit against Luis Severino, hitting his 115th hit of the season and his 24th double...Hague and Gregory Infante will participate in the Triple-A All Star game on Wednesday in Omaha, NE.
